BP Shotguns?

I don't see very many scattergun guys here I'm a shotgunner (of all types) at heart. Does anyone build their own BP shotguns like the long rifle guys do? I'm getting interested in building one.

WOW...that double flinter is gorgous

Two questions:

Where can I get a stock blank or semi finished one for a SxS?

and did you make that hunting bag yourself or buy it someplace, its a great looking piece.

I've got two T/C New Englanders, and now, two Husqvarna doubles, an 1898 Marlin, several Winchester 1893 and 1897 pumps and several single shots that I almost exclusively shoot holy black in.

Pics of one:

Those are some beautiful fowling pieces above Captchee!

What size barrel do you have on that Hudson Valley Fowler? My custom flintlock rifle has a 48" Getz barrel.

Andy

I actually just passed up buying a 16ga Husqvarna under-lever. It had beautiful wood, I kinda wish I had got it now but it's gone.

Anyone know where to find a nice semi carved stock to build a ML shotgun? I may have a line on barrels and locks. But I'm having trouble finding a place to order a stock. I want one either with a cheek piece roughed in or a blank with enough meat on it to carve one.

One of our clubs here in NE Ok has 2 or 3 front stuffer bp shotgun matches a year, great fun off the wobble trap. Had one this past Sat.

the bag was made by a friend of mine .

the barrel on my hudson valley is 56 inchs . which is rather short for a HV but i couldnt find anyone who would make me one in 67 or 70 inchs. LOL

as to wood for a SXS . i work from a plank so i ccant comment on their quality . But Tiger Hunt used to sell SXS pre carves for both muzzleloading and breech loading SXS shotguns

Thank you sir, I just checked out Tiger Hunt (gunstockwood.com). While they don't show semi-carved, they do sell blanks for ML SxSs...and at a good price for the figure

I though that bag looked special made. I found one similar in design from Track that I think I'm going to order next week.

One of my bags is similar to that. It's a Leatherman, made from buffalo.
from blackpowderbags.com

Almost forgot! One of my shotguns. Pedersoli 12 gauge.

im sorry fellas i was in a bit of a rush when i last posted .
I made my Hudson Valley fowler a few years back .
it has a 56 inch barrel . i originally these were rather large bore 12 gage or better . but i wanted a smaller bore so as to conserve lead so I requested a bore of .540 .
All the hardware , butt plate , side plate , TG and thimbles , I made from an old set of Damascus barrels that had long since past the usable state . The stock is maple . The thumb piece I made from a old very worn Liberty silver dollar.

The Bag , as I said , was made by a good friend who is a top notch Taylor.
The bag is actually my rifle bag .
I do a lot of off hand target shooting which includes speed shooting as well as hunting . So he built it to my spec’s . so I can quickly load without looking down from the target .

At the time I also had him making me another bag specifically for my fowlers . Here is that fowler bag

Man I wish I could just find one of the old CVA single barreled guns or even better a T/C New Englander without the screw in chokes. I have looked for a couple of years on Auction Arms and GB but never see any for sale.

You guys have some nice looking guns.

Need barrels or locks?

Call... Thegunworks.com 541-742-4118 or check out the web site. Ask for Joe or Susie. They have the best barrels around. He's part owner of green mountain barrel. I'm not privileged enough these days to know his wood supply, but he had lots of cross cut curly maple. I bought enough for about 2 dozen rifles and pistols years ago so I'm out of touch on that one.

I like getting unstarted blanks and using the scraps to make matching horn plugs, patch knife handle, and short starter handle for the gun. A match set

I also order my barrels with extra deep riflings( .016), but if you want a smooth bore he's got those too. I'm working on a double heavy barreled smooth bore 20ga(.62 cal) so I can shoot buck or ball without issue.

Ed Rayl also does SXS barrels to include complete sets as well as parts to make sets.
speaking of CVA sxs the flintlock SXS i showed above , started life as on old CVA cap lock whic i restocked and converted to flint.

the cap lock that the fella killed the Turkey with . thats a muzzleloading SXS that i built using breech loading barrels

My dad helped setup Oregon barrel. Did all the plumbing and electrical. I grow in the gun works. I traveled the BP/gun shows selling for Joe most of my childhood. Man I miss the good old days. Joe's a silent partner at GM. Don't tell anyone

Sorry a bit off topic. Back to your regular program.

I've got five 10g Damascus doubles that I shoot with black powder brass shells.

One of them, branded "John Buckingham", had the bottom rib separating for several inches back from the muzzle, so I cut it to 18 1/2", fabricated a new front sight, made a new plug for the gap between the barrels, and added some decorative tack work. It came out quite nice and is definitely a crowd pleaser at the Cowboy Action shoots.

A beautiful pattern on this 1889 Remington - I have two of these.

I've managed to accumulate about 175 pieces of brass for them over the past couple years, but attrition has claimed a few and I currently have 155 - here are some of them.

Nice Damascus gun. I have an old fluid steel barrel 16 ga. hammer gun that I shoot with black powder paper shells. Would like to try brass someday.

I've been reloading 12 gauge paper shells with BP for these two old SxS guns.
