My votes:
1) P-08 Luger. 2) Browning Hi-Power. 3) Glock 17. 4) Sig 226/228 series. 5) Beretta 92. Of course CZ-75 should be in there too, and probably H&K P-7, but I haven't had a chance to fire either of them.

I'm glad at least a couple of people have mentioned the P08. I don't know how you can discuss 9MMs and overlook that one! Yes, Virginia, there was a world of 9MMs before there were Glocks.

Ok, my list would be
#1 Any glock #2 HK usp #3 Hi Power #4 Smith M&P #5 Or any sig. I am a big 1911 fan too, but I'm not sure I'd care for a single stack 9. P.S. These are my favorites from what I've actually shot. So no disrespect to any not on my list. |

I'll play and throw some barely mentioned ones.
1. P.08 Luger 2. Browning HighPower 3. H&K P7 "Squeeze Cocker" 4. S&W 39 series (39, 439, 3913/3914, 539, 639) 5. Colt 9mm Combat Commander For those interested; 1. The Luger is a study in perfection with the exception of the tolerances being too tight for a combat weapon in rain/mud/snow. It's near-perfect pointing characteristics are due to the grip angle and design studies before "ergonomics" was coined. 2. The Browning HP led the way with a staggered double column magazine, great balance and hand feel as well as quick recovery. Down sides were bad sights, too small of a safety lever, mediocre accuracy and (on some) gritty triggers. 3. The P7 squeeze cocker is quick, easy to use and safe. Most are also very accurate and have good sights. It showed us a new way of thinking about safety as well as fast handling guns. 4. The S&W 39 series refined the awkward P-38 into a first rate handgun. Ergonomics are excellent and the gun well balanced for the 9mm round. Both my 39's are accurate and will feed almost anything from swc to flying ashtray JHPs. My 3914 won't win a beauty contest but she'll rap out 8 rounds of Speer 124gr GDHP +P rounds right on target without a hiccup. If you can get used to the Walther-style slide mounted safety and the wonky change in the trigger between DA & SA, it's a great gun. 5. Colt's 9mm Combat Commander is a ruggedly stable 1911 platform that dampens out most of the 9mm's recoil. My Series 80 digests most ammo with ease and throws empties into the parking lot behind our firing line. It's bigger and heavier that the S&W 39 but with a much better trigger and excellent accuracy. Honorable mentions: Glock 17/19 pistols Beretta 92 series Springfield EMP-9 - too new to form an opinion but I love the concept. CZ-P01

Ever made?
I would have to argue that the best one would be the Luger P08. Let's be realistic people. Glock has only been popular since the early 90's. There are other weapons out there which have been around for nearly 75 years. You are going to say that those which have stood the test of time are outranked by a new pistol that only has risen to popularity because of rappers and television? |

Fascinating! The 70 year old Browning P-35 Hi-Power is on virtually everyones list. It's fit to the hand and reliability are as good today as they were in 1935. It's basic design is in virtually every pistol listed. (and virtually every locked breech auto pistol made today)
John Moses Browning, you sure did 'em right, a giant among firearms designers. Roger |

Well, not exactly. Browning was certainly responsible for the Hi-Power's little known predecessor, the Grand Rendement (loosely translated, "High Capacity") pistol, developed for the French military and tested by them in 1922. When one looks at Browning's last patent, which bears U.S. Patent Office Number 1,618,510, and was filed on June 28, 1923--it's clear that the pistol depleted is the Grand Rendement, complete with such fen lures as a breech bolt running through the slide from the rear, which never made it to the pistol we know today as the Hi-Power. Most Popular Articles in Sports The 16 shot Grand Rendement 9mm Parabellum was a large gun with an ungainly appearance and overly long grip-frame. The man who brought the pistol down to a manageable size was Dieudonne Saive. Two years away from becoming head of all small arms production for FN, Salve was the company's most gifted gun designer in the absence of Browning, and was up to the task. Making Of A Masterpiece so you see its a Dieudonne Hi-Power Lol.

Maybe too broad of a category?
Historically speaking top 5 9mms? Then we have to seperate the compact 9mms from the service size 9mms. Modern day 9mms? Or target vs combat 9mms. My top five modern day combat service size 9mms would be (in no order): Glock 17 Beretta 92 CZ 75 Sig p226 HK P7/08 Top five historical or most influencial? See Tamera's post but move the Sig P210 to the number 4 spot. The inside rails were more influencial than the SS metal being used IMHO.

9's
I've only owned two 9mm pistols so I can't produce a whole list of five.
I had a Taurus 92 which was okay but I couldn't shoot it well, too early in my career. I have a SA XD9SC which I now shoot very well and it is accurate and reliable. I wish I had a Browning HP. I just bought but haven't shot a Radom viz 35. It is reported to be an excellent wartime pistol. It was originally Polish made until the Nazis over ran that country. They continued to manufacture to meet their own needs until the end of the war. The Radom came to an end when the Russians took control of eastern europe and imposed the TT-33 on that part of the world. I haven't shot a CZ-75, but if they are anything like the CZ-97B that I own, they that would go on the list. I'm not p*ssing on anyone else's list, I just don't have experience with a lot of those other guns, such as Sigs and Glocks. A lot of people like them so that means something. |
