Where is the best place to get the winchester 94 carbine?

I keep borrowing my buddies, and was wondering if there was a good place to get one of these fairly cheap. I guess I have been seeing them local for around 350-380 and was wondering if that was right.

If you're in the USA,you 're probably best off going to a gunshow or a local gunshop. They can be had used around my part of the country for $150 on up.

Not for free if that is what your faces mean. I meant if you can get them that cheap out there, half the price. I would happily pay what it is plus shipping to my local FFl.

Where exactly do you live that a Win 94 costs between $700 and $760? Your dealer can order from anywhere in the country at the same price that any of our dealers order at. Now his mark up is another matter entirely.

I live in the DFW area, and I said I couldn't find them any cheaper than 350-380.
fal308 said he had seen them for 150 on up. If he can get them for half price, I would love to have one. Maybe two.

AndrewH, we can probably get a lever action 94, new, for the same price most other people in the country can get them for. Used lever guns tend to sell a little higher here in Texas, because of the popularity. You can't get a new one for a $150. Dallas has some really big gun shows. Go before deer season and find a good used 94. I think you should be able to find one in the $200-$250 range.

Most of the ones I have been to around here have a pretty crappy selection of firearms. And the few they have seem to be way over priced. The used ones border on new prices.

You might want to make an overnighter out of it and run up I 35 to one of the o.k.c. shows.

They have several nice shows a year at the state fair grounds.
Used to be a lot of Winchesters and Marlins at most of the shows.

I am pretty sure it is a 94, I guess they call it a trapper. It only holds 9.

I know you're looking for the Win '94, but from all I've seen and read, most folks who know and love lever rifles would put the Winchester '94 near the bottom of the desireability list.

Much higher up would be the Marlin 1894, the Winchester/Browning/Rossi 1892, and the Winchester/Uberti 1873. Those lever rifles seem to have a much better reputation than Winchester's '94, though a Win '94 would get the job done.

The drawbacks of the 1873 is that its action is the weakest of those discussed (not great for hot hunting loads) and 1873's run around $800-900.

The Winchester 1892 (and its clones) has a very strong, Browning designed action. The Miroku of Japan made Browning '92's are the best, followed by the Miroku-made Winchester '92s. They are also moderately expensive at around $600-800. The Rossi of Brazil-made Navy Arms '92's are good quality as well, but not quite what the Miroku's are. The Rossi's are quite affordable, however, at around $400. An original American-made Winchester '92 would be nice as well, but considerably older. By the way, a French company now owns both Winchester and Browning and manufactures some firearms in Europe, some in the US, and some are made for them by Miroku in Japan. The Miroku's are know for high quality.

And Marlins 1894 has got to be the most popular, hot selling lever rifle going... available in a wide range of configurations... long rifles, short rifles, and carbines in a wide variety of calibers. The Marlins have always been and still are all American designed and made and you will not find a finer company to stand behind their product than Marlin... they are superb. And priced right.

Good food for thought before you seek out a Winchester '94, which in the end wouldn't be a terrible thing... just probably not the best choice either.

It is just for the ocasional CAS match. A buddy of mine, and my uncle in law both have them. They are just the short 1894. I thought it would be called a carbine, but my uncle in law says it was a trapper. I was just hoping to keep it lower in cost, as my buddy picked his up for around 250, but they seem to have gone into the 350 range now.
But that money may move now towards my car hobby and I will just have to keep borrowing for when I go, but if you have any fantastic finds I'd still like to know.

Sounds like you can keep borrowing the rifle until you find one that fits your budget and timetable.

I'll keep an eye peeled for you. What about cartridge?

I know of a shooter in Waco with a Rossi 92 carbine in 357/38 for $300 shipped. He might go a bit lower if you drove down and saved him the freight.

If you're just goofing, the Trapper is ok. The limitation of the number of cartridges you can load will handicap you at some time. Zwolfgang gave you some good information, if a little weighted to the Marlin side. My favorite shooting rifle is a Marlin, my favorite looking rifle is a 66 and my first rifle was a 92. I like them all.

I am mostly interested in 45, trying to keep reloading of different calibers down to a minimum. So as good a deal as that one is, I will have to pass on it because of the caliber
I just saw the cabella's review in American Rifleman and that one has me intruiged, but again I waited to long and the budget won't stand for something in that price range for a while.

I am not in any rush, I only get to play every couple of months.

This may not work for you, but on the SASS Wire there are reports of folks getting the Marlin 94 with a cheap hardwood stock and a round barrel for $300 new at Big 5 Sporting good stores.

The nearest one that I know of is in San Angelo. Maybe there is a store near you. The action is the same as the Cowboy model and they will hold 10 rounds.

Keep an eye out for 44 mag used Marlins in gun shops, I picked up one for $200 when I was first starting out.

The Trapper has a 16" barrel and the Carbine is 20". Some clubs will avoid writing stages with 10 rifle targets, but not all. So, you'd be stuck reloading a round on the clock for each round over 9.
