who built this rifle?
Hello everyone. Recently recieved a rifle to work up loads for. I was interested in knowing if anyone might have an idea who built it. It is a .220 swift on a mauser action. The name BONAR is engraved on the barrel, and also has W L BONAR FAIROAKS CA. U.S.A.F. stamped in the buttpad. It wears an 8 power unertyl externally adjustable scope and the front scope mount is soldered onto the barrel. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Could be a custom gun. Surely there is some other information on the rifle, somewhere. I need more information in order to help you. The soldered on scope mounts & being it's a 8X Unertyl leads me to think the scope might be a 40's/50's model scope. Does the scope have a coil spring on it?

Thanks for the reply. No the scope does not have a spring on it. I cannot really find anything else on the rifle to identify it. It does have the head of the .220 cartridge imbedded in the bottom of the stock though.

There is a Harry Bonar who posts from time to time on "The Smithy" forum. Try posting for him over there. Maybe he is related to W.L. Bonar or knows of him.
