Taurus CIA650

Hi
A friend of mine is considering to buy a Taurus .357 magnun model CIA 650 2" barrel (against my recomendations based upon my previous experiences with Taurus semi autos).

I want to know what do fellow TFL members think about this revolver, and what are their experiences. I want to give my firend a fair analysis rather then just my one sided story. I think it might be more use to him to convey him the responses from people who have hands on experience.

Apparently experience with the CIA650 is uncommon so I'm going to remove the restriction (below) on feedback.

In the interest of providing relevant information let's limit the input on this thread as follows:

Respond ONLY if you have fired at least 100 rounds through the gun in the OP.

Perhaps this is a clue as to why we see such a disparity of opinions on Taurus firearms...

Likewise. Is a good or bad experience with a closely similar but not identical piece warrant for comment in this thread?

well at this point I guess some info is better than nothing. I am, however, surprised that we dont have anyone experienced in the particular gun.

I had a 605 spurless DOA 2” .357 that I shot a lot. I Sold off this spring. It was the only Taurus Revolver I had, out of the 4, that did not need repaired (2 went back to the factory, one needed parts). So I guess that is good.

Based on the other 3 I will never own again anything that Says Taurus on it.

Taurus 605, stainless. I've had it for about 15 months. Solid so far. I'd say I've had close to a thousand rounds through it, mostly handloaded .38 Special. Only a couple cylinders worth of .357.

I don't think I've ever seen a 650.

taurus 605 lots of .357's and 38's. twice I've had the mag catch get stuck in the cylinder so it wouldn't lock closed and I had to tap it out with a punch. I'm going to upgrade to an sp101.

I have and carry a 650 and a 605. I switched grips to Taurus Combat Grips which are a little longer and thinner than the Standard Grips. I shoot nothing but 357mag in both guns. They both have smooth actions and shoot good. The 605 is so smooth you would think it had a custom action done. The 605 is also very accurate. It's every bit as accurate as my Friends 4" Ruger GP 100. I like to carry the 650 on my belt on my off hand side and the 605 on my belt strong side. Before I got my 442 I carried the 650 in my off hand pocket. I like the 650 a lot and would recommend it to anyone who is willing to practice with a DAO 357 Snub. They are not for everyone. To become accurate and used to the blast takes some practice. I like 357 Snubs and rotate Four of them with my Carry Guns.

I had a Taurus 650 and fed it a fairly steady diet of Winchester 110 grain JHPs without ever having an issue. Eventually I switched to carrying a S&W 442 because of the difference in weight, and Taurus sat around collecting dust until I gave it to my wife... well, actually she never shoots it, so it still sits around collecting dust.

Overall not many complaints about it. Fit and finish weren't up to Smith & Wesson standard, but it worked flawlessly so that was forgivable. Also, unlike the S&W, it's not supposed to be dry fired according to the manual and I ended wearing out quite a bit of AZoom snap caps practicing the trigger stroke.

mine has smooth trigger and its right on target but after 50 rounds of 357 it hurts
with 38spl i can go all day
great gun for the money
anything lighter in 357 i would not shoot

had a 651 (shrouded hammer) snubby that went back for a repair since the hammer rubbed against the shroud and jammed up the mechanism; my experience with Taurus revolvers is more miss than hit (due to inconsistent quality on varying models in the past), but I should have kept mine a bit longer after repairs to get better acclimated...wanted something different that didn't work out for me and I had seller's remorse...might save up for another one and replace the factory grip with a Pachmayr Compac to get get better control

Mu experience with Taurus Snubbies is this...
- 651ss, Flawless. A bit heavy, but has ran perfect in the 2 years Ive had it.
- Taurus 905(9mm), Piece of crap(although I really like thed gun) Jumped timing on me 2x, and would repeatedly light strike. Even after new/FP, and spring upgrades. it was sold after the last timing jump.

i have a taurus 651 which is very similar and have put 200 plus rounds through it. it has been great no problems with it at all. very accurate for the length of barrell. 2.5 inch groups at 21 feet. i have owned 6 taurus hand guns and loved them all, the only problem i had was a set of grips that had to be replaced due to overtightening at the factory. it took me 3 months to get them, their customer service is bad. just my experience hope it helps

i had one for a couple of days.....first shoot at the range i got 2 rounds fired and it locked up solid ...no trigger /no open.
the range master fiddled with it and got it open.....when unloaded it was cycling great....he tried some 38spl loads and got 5 down range.
i tried and got 3 too shoot.
the trigger was incredably HARD.
long story short it was sent back to taurus and after a 2week wait they claimed it was 3weeks from being looked at.

thankfully all shipping was done from the purchasing gun store and i got a full credit towards a 357 S&W 340.

In other words it would not shoot the 357 load, but .38spl is fine- just stiff trigger?

I've had a 650 for sevral years. It's been reliable. Accuracy is satisfactory for a short barrel revolver. Not as tight as a S&W 640-1, but then again I got mine for about one-third the cost of a new 640. .38 special FBI loads are comfortable in this gun. 158 gr .357s are a bit stout and I found the 125 gr. .357s to be uncomfortable. The 110 gr .357 Winchester loads (I believe it's their personal defense line) are somewhat easily managed but have an impressive fireball in my experience. My 650 was my truck gun for a long time until I stopped that practice. It goes with me fairly often, sometimes it stays in the truck for a short time when I'm out and about, but I don't leave a gun there permanently.

Round count is somewhere more than 300 but less than 600 rounds. I tried a bunch of different defensive loads as well as burning off some old 130 .38 special military issue ball I had, so I don't have a really accurate round count.

I like the gun and recommend it as long as you understand the characteristics and limitations of a small, short barrelled magnum revolver. The factory rubber grips are nearly ideal. BTW. They combine the concealable shortness of boot grips with the a fully enclosed frame to help with the recoil.

my has been good so far. I love the gun, but then again its my 1st CCW. did he ever get it? I like the firearm+recommend it for anyone who wishes a .357 CCW

I can't comment on the CIA 650, because I've never shot or owned one.

However, just a general comment on the T snubbies. I did own an M85 that I put many, many rounds through (.38 special) without any problems at all. The gun seemed well made, reliable and as accurate as other snubbies I've shot.

I also owned a titanium ultra lite with consealed hammer. Didn't care for that one as much, but it had no problems either. I just prefer the steel guns over the lightweight ones in general.

Overall, my personal experience with the Taurus snubbies has been all positive, so that's what I have to go by.

Also, my preference is for .38 special and not .357 mag in snubbies, regardless of manufacturer.

Just my 2 cents.

In the past I owned both the 650 and the 651. The 650 was flawless and the fit and finish (I had the stainless version) were great. The gun was also accurate and handled .357 rounds with comfort and ease. The 651 on the other hand had timing issues that could not be resolved by Taurus. I ended up trading it towards a Kahr.
