Remington 1187 Sportsman Field

Hey everybody. Today I saw a Remington 1187 Sportsman Field at Dicks Sporting Goods for $500 with wood stock. First, are these good, reliable shotguns? Second, is this a good price? Finally, would you recommend buying this shotgun? Thank you.

I would, but I like Remington semi autos, and that is not a bad price. I believe there is also a rebate on now. The 11-87 will not run as clean as some designs, but even with the dirtiest shells I have not known one that couldn't go more than 200 rounds between very easy 5 minute cleanings. Of course some people will tell you that you will be cursed because Remington is owned by Cerebus Capital now days, and apparently they are supposedly in league with the devil, but I don't go for that.
What do you plan to do with it?

Prices vary all over the country....you'll have to shop - the gunshops in your area to know if its competive or not. But its not always about getting the lowest price...its about buying a gun that "Fits" you ...so it hits where you look.

Mechanically the 11-87 is getting to be old technology compared to the newer gas operated models from Beretta, Browning - Winchester, etc ...but they're solid guns.

The price you saw at Dicks may or may not include the Remington rebate.

Virginian I plan on using it for Duck, goose, and the occasional trap or skeet. How does a gun like this compare to an 1100 reliability wise? Thank you everyone for your replies so far.

It's the same as an 1100 except for the barrel gas system - the 11-87 has relief ports - and a wider extractor. I sold one to a buddy in 1987 and he still uses it for waterfowl from Virginia to Manitoba.
