Tactical Pen??

I have seen multiple "tactical" pens...how are they tactical and what's so special about them? From what I've seen the only difference between them and a regular metal pen is the price and a screw on top. I don't see how it can be much of a help in any situation. Anyone have or use one? Please tell me because if there's something I'm missing then I'd like to know so I can get one to take to college for some form of self defense while in class.

I dunno, unless its got a handcuff key in a secret compartment and a combination 6" retractable fighting knife/visible-and-IR laser sight and can be mounted to a standard rail system in under 4 seconds, I dunno that tactical is the best description.

Expensive, maybe, but not tactical...

Truth be told, nearly anything can be used as a weapon, given the inclination.

That, and a pen with a sharp point I can carry on an airplane is mightier than the actual weapon I had to check with my baggage.

Any pen can be "tactical", if you use it in a "tactical way"

If all I had was a Bic Stick or a Bic Click, I'd most certainly give an attacker a stout poke with it. When it penetrated 1/4" & broke off because I didn't have a good straight lunge, someone would be real mad & I wouldn't have a usable pokey thing for another strike.

My guess is that a "tactical pen" would have a good stout body, maybe even machined from solid metal that would stand up to multiple pokings without being rendered useless if it got dragged across heavy clothing or hit a belt buckle.

I saw one that has a 5" spike that pops out where the nib normally is. It also has an ink cartridge, so you can use that. Looks like an ordinary pen, otherwise. The spike looks like an ice pick. I can't imagine putting it in your pocket though.

They are used to write really mean, nasty, threatening stuff on camoflage paper and passed to BG's.

The only use I have for my "tactical pen" is that it is an all weather pen for my "Rite in the Rain" notebook that I keep while in uniform. Works great. I suppose it could withstand multiple "pokings" since it caught an alternator from a HMMWVE and just dented it a little. Still works fine, clicks like when I bought it, and I paid what,,, 7 dollars for it. As far as the "Tactical" man killing pens out there, I would rather spend that money on more ammo.

A tactical pen is about as effective as tactical socks IMO. I'd assume any benefit of a "tac" pen would be solid construction for stabbing.

The only thing "tactical" about say, the surefire pen, is the quickness with which they snatch the additional $100 from your wallet when you buy it.

I've got a surefire pen. It writes well (feels good to write with), takes fisher refills, Costs the same as any well made (expensive) pen. I used the glass break tip on a couple large glass jars for fun, but it probably will never touch a window. It's just a solid pen that won't break, even if I have to use it as a kubotan. I keep it clipped to my left pocket, and any other pen there has broken.

I can think of one place at least that I can't bring a gun or knife that I go, and I like having something (though I'd probably never actually use it as a kubotan). At least not unless I start to practice using a kubotan.

Fastforty summed it up when he said anything can be tactical. I once had a self defence trainer demonstrating house hold items as tactical weapons-

rolled up newspaper, pen (especially aluminium ones that won't break off), coins stuffed into a sock or stocking make a wonderful black jack- it is amazing how many weapons are out there and can be readily improvised.

Just pick an item up-you can assess if it is going to break if it is jabbed into someone or they are struck with it.
