RCBS .38spcl. dies
I picked up a used(old) 3 die set#18306 group B.Can anyone tell me if the crimp is built into the seater die on these older sets?or do I need to get a seperate crimping die?
I also got with the dies a box of Speer bullets 160gr.JSP and I can't find any load data for them.Speer doesn't list it as a current product either(part#4223).The 160gr. seems more like a .357 round to me than a.38 Any info will be helpful,Thanks |

You should be safe to use reloading data for 158 grain jacketed bullets and reduce the data 10% to start and work up from there.
I can't tell you for absolute certain, but I would imagine those RCBS dies will crimp with the seating die.

In the Speer # 10 manual there's no difference in the charge on most powders
and on some others .2 of a grain with the 158 & 160 gr bullet. I like to seat my bullets with the die screwed out about 2-3 turns away from the final crimp and then screw Up the seated stem adjustment 3-4 turns and go back for the final crimp. I have the Lee Factory crimp die also but don't like it as much as the way I described. Good Luck with them. |

All 3 dies RCBS sets size, bell, seat, and crimp. [I've had mine since the 70's] If your die set is not a "carbide" set do youself a favor and pick up a LEE carbide sizing die. A Lee FDC is optional but a good investment.
BTW, It is not uncommon to shoot 158 gr LSWC bullets in .38 Special. http://alliantpowder.com/reloaders/R...17&bulletid=41 |

Thanks for the help.No the set isn't carbide but I don't think I'll be loading that many .38s,maybe 100 every few months,so i'll just lube 'em up for now.
Thanks again. Steve |
