Had to loan out my pepper spray
Friend of mine at work was talking about a guy loafing around her car before she got ready for work at 5pm. Long story short, he asked her all kinds of questions, making her feel very uncomfortable...even stating he would be at her place when she got off work at 130am.
So she gets my OC for a day. I offered to escort her home, but apparently a friend and her dad will do that duty tonight. Should be interesting the stories tomorrow! |

I have a bunch of mace/OC sprays.. any time a chick needs one I just give it to her. You can buy a new one for $8 or so, might as well. I think mace/OC is underrated, especially on these boards, for self protection.

I think OC is a lesser option especially compared to Pepper Spray, I would take a hit of OC any day of the week and twice on Sunday instead of Pepper Spray. (Of course it also matters what dosage and type of Pepper spray it is)

Not meaning to hijack the thread. What is the shelf life of an unused can of OC, i.e. how long will it stay potent?

TwoXForr, am I missing something? OC, Oleoresin Capsicum, is pepper spray, right? Are you thinking CN, chloroacetophenone, or CS (from "Carson and Staughton," the inventors, or 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile) perhaps?

You are right, my mind was thinking Tear Gas, and my hands were saying OC.

Sabre Red is the best stuff I've seen used.

Sabre (not Sabre-Red) has CS tear gas (what I call 'Mace,' though not really the right term) in addition to OC. OC causes more pain but CS causes panic and nausea, at least for me. I've gotten OC in my eye and it was like having a sliver of glass in there... terrible. But the fumes from the CS making me nauseated and panicky is just as bad. I can't imagine what both would be like, which is why I choose Sabre, which has both. OC would make me want to stop what I'm doing, CS makes me want to leave the area ASAP. To have it on one's face and shirt would be a horrible experience.

Having experienced the pain of it in police academy, I'll vouch for First Defense brand OC. 10% OC was what I was hit with and won't choose anything less than that.
Keep in mind it can take up to 10 seconds to really take effect. Have a plan for the interim. OC is not likely to stop a goal oriented individual. I ran through the academy course like lightning but hit my knees as soon as it was completed. Then again, I knew it was coming. If presented properly, the BG won't. The expiration date is for the propellant, not the OC. I too believe OC is underrated and undervalued.

When i worked in the rocky mtns, I was given a can of bear spray. (its a special blend for fending off bear attacks) I had the unfortunate luck of experiencing some slight overspray from this stuff, while standing upwind of somone test firing a can.... That stuff is vile. I wasnt directly hit, but i was blinded, almost stopped breathing, and seconds after being exposed, i was vomiting. I'd hate to see what a direct hit would do to a person.
I've still got my can, and I keep it in the truck, should the need for it arise. |
