300 WinMag Powder Choice Question
I'm an experienced handloader so I'm up to speed with safety procedures when working up loads. With all the different powders out there, which one's have you found that your 300WinMag likes? I have been partial to IMR powders and thought that IMR 4350 looks good for 180 grain bullets. Any suggestions or comments? Thanks

I have had very accurate loads using 4064 with 150gr Hornady SST bullets myself.

I tried IMR 4350 with 180 gr bullets for .300 Win Mag but got better accuracy with IMR-7828. IMR 4350 has worked better for me in .30-06 180 gr loads.

4831
IMR 4350 is a great 30-06 powder and a good 300 Win powder for 165 & 180 grain....but you will probably like the slower 4831 better for the 180+ grain.

From the late 60's thru the 90's I have wrung out my 300WM on paper and a lot of game animals. I've biggame tested 150, 165, and 180 grain bullets in a variety of brands.
I have found the most accurate bullet/powder combo to 500 yards is the 200 gr Nosler Partition with max load of IMR4831. Not only is the trajectory extreemly flat, but the energy retention is excellent.

Ruger KM MK-II 24" stainless, chrome lined
Hornaday 180gr. BTHP match or Hornaday 190gr BTSP 72.2gr H4831sc CCI 250 OAL 3.292 Held ~.5in at 200yds, prone with sling (military fashion). While I liked IMR4831, the H4831sc - just metered better. |

Well, I have to agree with you, IMR 4350 worked best for me with the 180gr Noslers. With .670 3 shot groups, I don't see the need for futher testing on this sporter.
These are the powders I tried before settling on my best load.IMR-4831, IMR-4350, H-4381, H-4350, H-870, H-450. I would have liked to tried out R-19, as it does look perfect on paper, but wasn't available when I was working out my best loads. Richard PS: Anyone local want to trade 1 lb (minus 15 loads) H870 for a like weight of Reloader 19? |

Before I had my Model 70 rebarreled, RL-22 was good. Now IMR 4350 works great with 180gr Partitions. (3/4 inch @ 100yds)
