registering an older gun

I have a friend that is a retired Michigan State Trooper, and wants me to have his .25 cal. Baby Browning. It was one of his back-ups until the MSP went to the .38 stubby. He don't remember ever registering the firearm. He bought this Gun in 1965. My question is, what is the procedure to finding out who it is registered to, and registering the Gun to me? Is it possible that in 1965 you didn't have to register handguns or if you were a police officer you were not required to register. I live in Michigan, Southwest corner, Berrien County. If its a FTF sale, I dont think you have to register anything

If your both a resident of Pa just go down to your local FFL and do the transfer. No beforehand registration is required.

That's going to depend on where you are. Lot's of places, it's not necessary at all.

In Michigan it is my understanding that the law changed to just requiring a "permit to purchase" and that registration (safety inspections) were dropped.

Check with your county sheriff.

The law was enacted in 1927, so the pistol had to be registered.

That said, don't worry about it. Just have the seller fill out his portion of the purchase permit and deliver the completed permit to your local police station.

They will run the serial number to see if it is stolen. If it is not stolen, they will register it in your name.

That's all there is to it.
