Help Me Pick...

I was trying to decide between a 590 and an 870 and I've landed on the 870.

When looking on Remington's site I notice that not all of the 870's can be viewed on the site. So, here's what I'm looking for. I kind of want an all around gun.

I was looking at the tacticals and it doesn't appear that you can change chokes/barrels, so I was looking for one that has changeable chokes and/or barrels. I'm looking at 18" for HD and 26-28" for deer etc...

I like the 870 Tac 2 because it has the Knoxx SpecOps stock which is supposed to reduce recoil drastically, so I'm looking for a gun with a synthetic forearm already on it that has changeable barrels and chokes and preferably ghost ring sites. And I wouldn't mind be able to mount a scope on it either.

Help?

Unless you're on a SWAT team or something like that, just get a used, decent condition Remington 870 with one of the two barrels you're looking for. Then with the money you saved get the other barrel.

For HD, the BG isn't going to be any more scared because you have a heat shield and a magazine tube extension.

I'd go with the 590 or an older 870. (at least 10 years old)

If you really want a 2 in 1 I'd go with a 500. You can get them at big5 for around 200$. Extra barrels for the others are almost as expensive as a new gun. So I'd say just get the gun you want most now and another later. Good luck

Probably the only gun that I fear a little. When I see one, I have trouble turning my back on it.
Makes me think the antis are onto something with the guns kill people line.

Remington's site doesn't really say, so at risk of sounding like a complete noob, can one switch out barrels on ALL of the 870's?

All 12 guage 870 barrels should interchange. With the exception of the 870 Comp trap model. that one had a gas system like an 1100 to reduce recoil.

You can even drill holes in one and use it on an old 878 (low production gas auto) in a pinch.

1100's are the same way. but they don't go on 11-87 because the extractor slot is wider.

I would prefer a nice glossy finish Wingmaster myself rather than plastic stocks and pistol grips, etc, but I'm old fashioned.

You are correct about the Wingmaster barrels having a different finish from the Express models. That's why Wingmasters cost more than expresses.

What you may be looking for are Remington's Law Enforcement guns. These 870 models are built to police standards and are closer to Wingmasters than Expresses. Check out http://www.remingtonle.com/shotguns/shotguns.htm

The LE models are probably bid based prices, I have no experience in that arena. Scattergun Bob and/or Dave McC might have LE purchasing info.

IMHO, unless you're a serious duck and goose guy, the 3-1/2 is overkill. Most folks who shoot 3-1/2s in their Expresses have commented about wanting some manner of recoil reduction. If you're really interested in a big boomer, you could be the first kid on your block to have a new Remington Model 887 Nitromag.

Yeah, I called a few places on the 887 and they said that there weren't many on the shelves because they're still working out the bugs and whatnot. It's a nice looking gun and all but I think I'd wait for them to get everything right with it.

At most I'd be doing some duck now and then but not as often as say deer and trap/skeet. So a 3" would probably suit my needs just fine, but I like the option of 3 1/2". Again, that severely diminishes my selection though and I'll probably end up going 3".

If you've never shot a 3 inch turkey load I won't worry about a shotgun that shoots 3 1/2. A 3 inch turkey load out of an 870 will feel like all the power you will ever need.

I have an 870 police with the walnut stock, 18 inch barrel and a 26 inch barrel with interchangeable choke. I wouldn't trade this for any comparable shotgun.

There are all kinds of used HD guns out there. A mossberg 500 is just as good, just as relieable and is cheaper than a 870. Food for thought: You use it and it will be taken for the investigation that will go on for months and sometime years. Get a cheap gun that is relieable. Gun Broker has 100's of used shotguns listed.
