Hard to argue with this. Assuming good ammo selection, either one will work just fine at that distance.

Ak47..well when we go hog hunting I normally end up beating my gun or getting it muddy..so the ak47 would be my choice

Over a buck a shot for slugs, 20 cents for 7.62x39.

Depends upon the volume of shooting...

There is someone on this forum who has posted about taking hogs with .22LR with head shots.

There is also a YouTube video of a hog getting hit in the neck with a blast from a 12ga slug and appears to die but then gets up and runs away.

Idk who posted about it before me but that's the way we used to kill hogs when we trapped them..22 straight to the head..rarely ever did it take more than one

I am going to use the best compromise of these two choices I know of. My Saiga S-12..built on the AK operating system but using the 12 ga slugs. I'll see how it functions on Hogs in a couple of weeks.

I will also use my Winchester Model 100 in .308 on the same hunt. I want to be able to compare the Rifle vs Shotgun on 40-80 yard Hog shooting for my own 'style' and comfort.

The AK-47 and SKS are my main hog hunting guns. They have yet to fail me if i do my part. Especially within 50 yards.

Don't pull an Evan Marshall / Ed Sanow on us.

If you're going to shoot slugs and 308 - shoot them in the same place, wherever that is, head shot or right behind the front leg or whatever.

If you have different shot placements your one-shot-stop percentages won't be valid...

Personally I'd like to see you shoot them in the vitals.. or y'know right behind the front leg. I don't think there would be much difference between a slug or a .308 or .223 or 22LR for that matter if you shot them in the brain pan.

I wonder which is more forgiving of not being right on target the slug or the rifle bullet.

Are you going to be using hollow points?

The 308 will be using Remington 180 grain PSP ammo. I have about 200 rounds of Silver Wolf 140 grain SP, but I am not planning to use that in the hunt.

The 12 ga Slugs are a mix of 1 oz Remington Sluggers and Federal HP also 1 oz. All rated at over 1600fps

I don't trust my skills for "Ear Shots", so the Heart Lung shot is what I have been targeting during the field practice here at home.

To the OP: I would think that the purpose of the hunt would dictate the choice. If your goal is for meat, I'd go with the AK. If you're just irradicating Hogs, I'd go with the M4 with accurate slugs. My M4 likes just plain old Remington Buck Slammers. It's ring/ghost sights will put me in the 8-9-X ring on a B-27 at 50yds everyday. If you're irradicating hogs and going to donate/use the meat, head shots with the 7.62 x 39. IMO

I personally wouldn't take my shotgun pig hunting, not unless all my shots were guaranteed to be within 75 yards for slugs and 35 yards with buck-shot.
I can make hits at a 100 yards with slugs, but its not consistant and follow up shots at that distance wouldn't happen as they'd all scatter and then it'd be total pandemonium at that point.
I would be totally satisfied with my AK for pig hunting, it'll take them up close and at distance too and follow up shots would be alot easier and more accurate.
I would like to pig hunt with my AK one day.

What's the barrel length of the M4? One contributing factor regarding my Saiga is it's 19 inch barrel length, making use in brush or closer-in shooting a bit easier than the 26-28" 'normal' shotgun.

We leave for our hunt a week from today. I guess the answers (for me) will be coming along shortly after that !
