Reloads for .357/180-grain bullet

I've got a six-inch S&W 686 that I want to reload with the Remington 180 grain SJHP. Does anybody have a recipe using either H110 or Win 296 powder ?? Just looking for a middle-of-the road load for some hunting.

W-296 From 11.1 grains to 15.9 grains

WS2, I see you're reaching the same conclusion on n110 that I'm coming to. Real good for stout loads. (I can't match your level of experience, but nice to know I'm headed the right direction)

Speer #10 lists 296 powder max 16.0 @1582 10"bbl.
min 14.0 @1438
110 powder max 15.6 @1523

All loads use a CCI 550 primer.
I like from 12 to 13.5gr of 2400 with WSP maybe not as fast (FPS) but it is a more versitile powder for my use.

I use that exact same bullet in my "woods carry" loads. I use either 15gr of H110 with a Winchester small pistol mag primer or 13.5gr of 2400 with a Winchester small pistol standard primer. I get nearly identical velocities and accuracy with both loads (1200fps and .5" at 10yds offhand out of my 4" GP100). I'm leaning more towards the H110 load because I have nearly 8lbs (vs 1/4lb of 2400) and because it may get a larger velocity increase from my 357mag levergun (haven't tried it yet).

Note: I trim my brass to the short side of the 357mag spec because those bullets are so danged long (actually, crimp groove is low on the bullet).

Note 2: I worked up to these loads in my gun using a chronograph and working in .25gr increments. My goal was an accurate 1200fps. Please start lower and work up.

My all round load for .357 has become 15 grains of H-110 behind 173 or 180 Cast bullets. 1150 in snubs to 1400 in long toms and 1600 in carbines. This load is not red hot, and accurate in everything I,ve tried it in. Cast hard the penetration has to be seen to be believed. I WOULD NOT use lead bullet in light J frames but would carry JSP 180s for emergency bear defense(small bears) or big game coup d'gra with one.Of course it is not a dedicated antipersonnell round.

WS2, if you're talking about your 7.5" barrel, I'm betting between 1500 and 1600 fps.

JWM, I have the exact same revolver, mine has taken two whiteail. One with the Remington 180 SJHP, and the other with a 180 cast WFP.
I have used WW296, but find for my revolver VVN110 out performs 296.
From my 6" 686 I have had velosity of 1200fps. Accuracy is outstanding. But that might be more the gun than the load, everything I have shot has been great.

Actually, I never said I use either 2400 or N110; I like the more dangerous 3N37 under my 180g R-P.

You know, I haven't spend any real quality blow-up time with my 357 Redhawk.

Haven't got manuals for that powder, and I'm not going to do something stupid(like screw around with a powder I know nothing about).

But I'm curious, how close am I with my velocity guess?

I'll find out.

I know (not guess -- know) that my 1260fps 180g load blows the primers in my 'Hawk but works fine (and gives 1160fps) from my 4" GP's.
I think I've seen some bigger numbers with lighter bullets, but some many loads so little time.

I don't get as much personal-ammo time as I'd like.

(guess = max from MY gun might end up around 1400fps for this bullet; faster I'll use lead)

WS2, I wasn't paying attention to your slug type, only weight. I shoot amost exclusively hardcast, assumed yours was the same.

I know, I know, never assume, it makes an ass/u/me.

Please post velocities I'm very curious.

The best I can do is offer to look up a load recipie in my LoadMAP, but I know it doesn't have any 3N37 listed. Every weight and bullet style known to mankind but not all the powder choices (only about 11 or 12 different powders).

If you plan on reloading .357 at all this manual is a must have. Midway has them on closeout for $2.99 IIRC. Not only does it provide info by bullet weight it provindes specific info for type and manufacturer in each weight.

The Midway LoadMaps are better than nothing, but don't impress me EXCEPT in their specific test not-a-gun.

The auto version are worthless because no one I know shoots from a UTR.

Speer, Accurate, Hornady, Lyman; now them's some books!

15gr Li'l Gun, mag primer, 180gr HP-XTP, works like a champ.

Might be a bit heavy for some revos, ymmv...max load..start 10% lower...etc...

We need an acronym that covers all the standard disclaimers.
