Woohoo, New Chronograph Arrived Today
I'm like a kid on Christmas Day.....now if I can just convince my wife that I HAVE to go make sure it works.
Maybe I can play the, I need to check and see if it works or not so I can send it back if it doesn't. LOL. Got the MagnetoSpeed v1 from Brownells. Man they ship fast. I plan on doing a full review. I've only been reloading about 2 years, and this is my very first chronograph. Can't wait to try it out. |

Woohoo, New Chronograph Arrived Today
I do have a question....when I go take it out tomorrow, what's a good amount of rounds to shoot over it to get a good reading of the MV? 5? 10? 20?
I just want to be able to get a good reading is all. Kind of excited to finally get a solid number or at least an avg of my reloads. Been reloading almost 2 years and have been going by a guesstimate. I do plan on writing down what I believe they are going and see how close I've been. |

I usually just do a mag's worth (7). My worksheet that I bring out to the range with me has space for 7 entries.
Some would say 7 is not enough, but it'll usually give you enough data to determine if you want to keep that load; move up, or move down (the chrono data, coupled with other factors, of course). I'll shoot more if it's a recipe that I've loaded for a long time, and I want to really narrow down the true average. And. . . sometimes it just seems "right" to do a few more - especially if you're getting a lot of variance (which is telling in and of itself).

Yeah the main load I want to check is the one I shoot in FTR since I've used in in three matches and my scores have been improving every time.
Another one I'm interested in is my 7mm RM load that is super accurate for my hunting round. It puts 5 shots in the spot of a dime. So I'm really interested in that one. |

As to your question about the number of rounds for a data set... For pistol rounds I generally like to shoot 20rnds over the chrono. Smaller strings will not show you enough information. You will be able to tell just how consistent your loads are much better with 20 shot strings than with the smaller ones you mentioned.
For rifle, it being more expensive to shoot long strings, I suppose I would settle on 10 as the smallest acceptable data pool, but if you notice too much variation in that string, then more would be necessary anyway.

I'm still not convinced that having the chronograph strapped to your barrel doesn't alter the accuracy, POI, etc. of the bullet. When I use my chronograph, I'm shooting a target for grouping while checking the velocity.
I hope it works OK for you. |

Oh yeah, it worked excellent actually. I just got a chronograph. I'll probably still shoot for groups during my workup to see what works best then try it over the chronograph. IMHO, accuracy far outweighs velocity. A bullet can go as fast as it possibly can, but if it's not going to hit its mark, doesn't really matter.

I received my Magnetospeed last week also. Looking forward to getting out to the range. I've been reading a lot about it on forums and watching videos on Youtube. It does change POI slightly, so most people shoot for accuracy, then mount the chrono to check the speed.

What's not to like about a chronograph that doesn't require a ceasefire to set up, isn't out in the rain on a lousy day (assuming your range has covered shooting positions), and is self adjusting should you change targets?
Something that's not reliant on lighting conditions being absolutely perfect or "buzzed out" if someone turns on fluorescent lights nearby. Enough to make the new owner smile wide enough to eat a banana sideways.
