Sorting LPP from SPP .45 ACP
Recently started cleaning all my .45 brass as I was out of out of clean brass for loading. Knowing I now have to seperate out large primer from small primer cases I've been pondering a way to do this in a fairly efficient and reliable way. Finally came up with something that works well for me.
I have a RCBS hand priming tool, I imagine the others have similiar designs and parts. It has 2 different size primer seating rods, one for small and the other for large. If I set out a bunch of deprimed brass on my bench, primer hole facing up and use just the large rod, not the enitre priming tool, to see what cases it fits into and which it doesn't, I have been able to sort them out relatively quick. Just thought I'd share in case anybody else was in a similiar situation. |

You can do the same with Lee's primer pocket cleaning tool. Use the large end and clean primer pockets. The cases that the cleaning tool won't fit in go in the recycle bucket.

I just eyeball em. Pretty easy to tell just with a glance.

I used to think that way also, but with the questionable availability of primers lately, it's nice to have a caliber in one's SD armory that can use different primers. |

I like the SPP 45's. One less primer Type to buy as I also reload 9mm.

I eyeball them when I pick them up and again when I'm feeding the Dillon. I'm about 96% accurate. I wish they never went to the small ones though. I'm segregating them to have some expendable brass to load. In some matches it is hard to retrive your brass.

I just eyeball LPP and SPP brass, it only takes a minute to separate it.
I use the SPP brass in any lost brass matches, or shooting in the snow when I know there's a good chance that it will not be recovered.
