How To Replace Bead Site On Shotgun

I originally posted this in the Shotgun forum but realized it belongs here in The Smithy.

I want to replace the front bead site of my new Mossberg 590 with a TruGlo bead. Before I go digging at it with a pair of Vise-Grips I thought I should check here.

Is there anything special involved in removing the standard bead site? I'm assuming it's a standard screw-in situation and I can simply wrap the site with a thin towel (to protect from scratching) and use pliers to unscrew. Am I correct or is there something different that I need to know?

Sir;
There are as far as I know two types of bead sights on shotguns, one is the screw type - either 3X56 or 6X48 thread sizes - the other is a drive in tapered sight.
I use a drill chuck to change both but this ruins the sight generally. Brownells sells a proper tool that does it regardless!

Thanks, Harry. The Mossberg is a screw-in with 5-40 according to TruGlo.

Most of the Mossbergs are screw-in. Just get a good grip on it with a pin vise or parallel-jaw pliers and unscrew it, then screw the new bead in. Use a spot of blue thread locker on the threads of the new bead.

If you don't have a proper tool, make sure you pad the jaws of the pliers before screwing the sight in. Masking tape, duct tape, or rubber will do.
