I don't know what the current record is, but I found mention of a 1.174" group at 600 yards, .19 MOA in 2004. He was not shooting an off the shelf rifle.

I have a bone stock Savage 10 FP in the Choate stock that will easily shoot 1MOA at 350 yd. Why go the custom route? With the right ammo (handloaded) it is easily a 1/2MOA gun. I have a Super Sniper 10x42 scope on it and it is highly effective. Truth is that I often do not shoot up to the capability of the rifle, but when I do, it is distinctly satisfying.

You will definately want a 1/7, 1/8, or 1/9 twist rate for heavier bullets.

If he goes with a Stevens action and custom stock he'll still be at or below the cost of the 10 FP, and it will be just as accurate since both are Savage factory barrels. I'll agree with the OP also, as someone who's built a few bolt guns and AR's, there is something satisfying about building your own rifles even if you don't save anything or even spend a little more in the end. Building is a hobby of its own, which may not appeal to everyone, but is something that some of us truly enjoy. Same reason I handload even when in some instances the cost savings are minimal. These are all just different aspects of the shooting sports to be enjoyed.

So what model savage or stevens do I want to look for?

Stevens 200
Savage 11
Savage 10
Savage 12

Any others?

and besides gunbroker.com where else can you find used guns online?

Thank you
