Gen. 4 G17

I've been reading up a little on the Gen 4 models, and I've heard the 17's have had some cycling issues. Are the Gen 4's good to go by now, especially the 9mm models?

I've had mine for six months and it runs like a champ. Thousands of rounds through it, mostly cheapo Winchester White box.

They had a recoil spring "upgrade" (recall) early on, and made a change to the ejector... there were assorted comments about other MIM parts having issues, but to a much lesser degree. Those are the only frequently commented upon issues I'm aware of.

Funny thing about Glocks... they are so many out there and so typically reliable that when something does go wrong, there is, what I feel, a disproportionate number of negative comments on the internet. Those comments are usually followed by 25 "my gun works fine" comments... but no one remembers those.

On a personal note... I'm not a Glock fan by any stretch of the imagination, and since they started putting finger grooves on them in the Gen3 series, I stopped even trying to like them because they simply do not feel good in my hands.... but, disregarding my personal views and looking at the big picture, I could do a hell of a lot worse than having a Gen4 Glock 17 in my hand when the SHTF... and in the 9mm Luger caliber, not much better.

I've had mine over a year, and probably put a thousand round through it. Not a single failure, the usual boring/reliable Glock performance.

Are the Gen 4's on the shelves all up to date with these upgrades by now, or is there a some way to tell before purchase?

I imagine so... but I'm not the guy to ask. Wait a while and there's a high probability that someone with the gift of "Glockenspiel" will come along.

Shot 100 rounds of Federal 115-grain through a brand new G17 Gen4 at Front Range Gun Club in Loveland, CO weekend before last. Ran wonderfully

Have a Gen 4 34 which is built on the 17 frame. Hasn't malfunctioned for me yet, put I've seen quite a few others induce malfunctions.

I had some cycling issues with my gen4 17L shooting WWB and PMC, but it loves my reloads, so I'm going to run it as is. It will probably break in enough after a few hundred to run economy store rounds. Why mess with perfection?
I got just what I wanted. It's a beautiful thing.

Light, standard pressure ball will have the least recoil impulse. Factor in that not a ton of love is put into making sure the powder levels in these rounds are consistent and that the full size 9mm frame is sprung for +P and +P+, you're going to have cycling issues.

Ditto 10mm . The hotter, the better for every Glock I've owned.

I can't say for sure, since I don't feel like digging around in my closet, but on the box a production date is usually in with the other model information. You could ask to see its box. Otherwise, if you can go to a LGS that does a lot of business and you're at least more likely to get something from a newer batch than something they've had for awhile.

There is also a number on the ejector(IIRC) which could be used to determine if it's an updated one. However IIRC that number cannot be seen with with just a field strip.

Hopefully someone who knows the details of this can comment further.

I have two G34 Gen 3, it's my favorite 9mm and "business" pistol. For practice WWB is all I use, with the few odd times that Walmart has Federal which is sometimes cheaper.

I have thousands of rounds through both of them and I can't recall a single failure.

The Gen 4s are sprung a lot differently. I have a Gen 4 34 and have seen tons of people with small hands induce failures with it and WWB.

10mm, Sliptap, thanks for the reassurance. I think that spring is serendipity for my purposes. Helps keep my mind off of excessive frame wear induced by full power ammunition.

Run it with some manner of +P ammunition. That will do more to assure functionality. Like I said, function has been 100% with mine when I fired it, but I have seen others induce failures with 115gr WWB. In other words, a poor grip - like the one that the extreme stress of defending yours life could induce - will promote malfunctions with weaker ammunition. That +P will definitely cycle. Corbon 125gr +P would be my specific recommendation.

I just got a gen4 19, test fire date was September 17, 2012. Functioned flawlessly right out of the box, I think you would be good to go

My gen3 g19 made in 08/2012 had massive ejection issues and I sold it. Glock CS was useless. All I can say is buyer beware if buying a new gen3 or gen4 glock.

My wife's got a Gen 4 G17 that will feed and fire anything we've managed to stuff into the magazine...9mm that is! 1200 rounds and counting. Rod
