wards western field rifle model 32a 22 s.l & l.r.

Hey folks, newbie here, first post.
I've acquired this rifle from my grandfather whos passed. I believe he got it from his father. Does anyone know the history of these rifles? This one has no serial I can see.It seems to be in good shaped, being a 22 do you think I should have it checked by a gunsmith before firing?( I really don't have the money to spare) Would I be correct in assuming S.L. stands for shorts and L.R. stands for long rifle? And last but not least does any one know where or if I could get teardown instructions? Sorry for the amount of questions on my first post but I'd like to teach my daughter to shoot with it ,kind of keep it in the family. Thanks in advance.
