What measures do you take to prevent firearms related incidents while cleaning, on range or carrying and handling?

How to prevent firearms related incidents?

With all due respect, why is this question even being asked? Its really easy, but some people may need a refresher:

Rule # 1
Treat all guns as if they are loaded.

Rule # 2
Never let the muzzle of a gun point at anything you do not want to destroy or kill.

Rule # 3
Keep your finger straight and off the trigger or as it was told to me, "Keep your booger hook off the bang switch!"

Rule # 4
Be absolutely sure of your target, and what is behind it.

Treat your guns like pet rattlesnakes.Be alert, watch 'em and know which way their pointed!!

VISUALLY check when unloading a gun. With a revolver, open the cylinder and LOOK. With a semi, be sure to rack the slide and LOOK in the chamber after dropping the magazine.

Never idly pull the trigger. One day you'll think it's unloaded and it won't be.

+1 and add....if ANY time has elapsed since the last check or you have inserted/removed a magazine....CHECK AGAIN!!!

Visually and physically inspect. Stick your finger in the the actions and cylinders.

The 4 laws cover a lot of ground, At the range I would add, keep track of how much ammo you brought and how much you've shot. Place your gun in its carrying case as soon as your done with it and cleared it.

This free online training is offered by the state of Maryland; it is required in Maryland to buy a 'regulated firearm', but other folks can watch and learn too.

If you are just learning about firearms, or need to train someone new to firearms, this is an easy starting point.

I think one cannot be more sure than after inserting one's finger to make sure there is NO bullet in the chamber.

Practice the 4 rules religiously, make sure EVERYONE in the house knows them backwards and forwards and has a very healthy familiarity with and respect for firearms.
