where to find load data for an 1858 with a .45 Colt conversion ?
I can not seem to find any load data
Can it be loaded hot enough for hunting ? Say Pig out to 50yds. ?

They will stand up to any off the shelf (SAAMI) ammunition. It is not a "magnum" revolver. None of the replica "cowboy" guns are.

If you want to shoot the 1858 Uberti with it's maximum performance then stick with black powder. At the pressures it was desiigned to work at it will give your best return for power.

A lead slug on top of a case full of BP at around 900-1000fps is a potent round. I deer hunt with a replica 1873 winchester rifle in .44-40 and BP ammo. A full BP round with a 200 grain bullet moves at about 1300fps out of a rifle. The current factory hunting ammo made by Winchester does about 1180.

Is your 1858 a factory-built conversion in 45 Colt, or a black powder frame with a conversion cylinder?

I own a factory conversion 1858 from Uberti (Cimarron rollmark) and it is built to handle most any "normal" commercial loads in 45LC.

It is NOT "cowboy only" loads, as many suggest for the black powder frames.

If yours is a black powder model with conversion cylinder...the word is: "low pressure" loads

Thanks for the input.
Not looking to shoot magnum loads, just loads hot enough to take say a pig at 50yds. if possible.
I do not have a revolver yet, plan is to purchase probably a Uberti 1858 cap and ball and later add a .45 cylinder.

wheelyfun: It was my understanding that the factory conversion 1858 is just that a conversion the factory does. I have not read that they use a complete different frame to build on

I just looked at my Uberti Owner's manual to double check what they say regarding ammo choices for the factory conversion models.

The manual states (I'm paraphrasing) that any ammunition that is within SAAMI specs is acceptable. No where in the entire manual does it use the terms "cowboy ammo only", as I know that some reproductions do....

My feeling that the frame is different vs the black powder models comes from the fact that most 1858 reproductions say "black powder only" on the frame, and most conversion cylinder manufacturers say to use "cowboy loads" only.

So, perhaps there IS no difference in frames, but I know that my factory conversion is good to go with all "standard" ammo.

p.s.-my manual also states that using reloads voids the warranty....but I guess that is standard practice?

The frames and cylinders on Uberti "factory conversions" are bigger/thicker/stronger than the cap & ball versions. If you get a C&B revolver and convert it you can only use BP or "cowboy" loads in your gun. As I said in my first post, any off the shelf (SAAMI) ammo is fine in a "factory conversion".

+2 on MJN77's post. The cylinders of the BP 1858's will not fit the factory cartridge conversion model, they are too small. This is because the factory conversion is beefed up and is designed to shoot any "normal" .45 Colt loading that is not in the "Ruger Only" section of reloading manuals. I have a conversion cylinder for my BP 1858 and I only shoot BP or light smokeless loads with Trail Boss in it.
