1911?

Please excuse my ignorance. My straightforward question is
- What is exactly a 1911?

Thanks

March 29, 1911

to be more precise.

A pretty good place to start:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1911_pistol

Or if you don't have the time and want the Reader's Digest version:
John Moses Browning's semi-automatic pistol design submitted to/for the US military and adopted by them on March 29, 1911; 1911.

Its arguably the finest semi automatic handgun design ever produced.
Other than that, What AZAK said.

Only to correct a misnomer.....there is no argument, it is the finest semi-auto handgun ever designed....

The triggers are what makes them great ...they are not hinged ( so they don't swing thru an arc )...the trigger moves straight back and forth inside the frame....and when properly fit - they have no creep and no slack / and break like "glass"....

The trigger on my $400 Filipino slag gun 1911 is better than any DA/SA gun at any price: It is more consistant, shorter, breaks cleaner, and has a shorter reset than ANY other design.

If you are new to pistols, avoid learning on a 1911, as that trigger will ruin you for just about everything else.

Like AZAK said, a 1911 is a firearm based off of John Browning's original design that was adopted by the US military in 1911.

The patents for the overall design expired long ago, so many companies make them now. Some are more traditional, some have more modern features, but they're all directly derived from John Browning's original design.

Go to a range that rents guns and try a 1911. Then try just about anything else.

I have striker fired Glocks and Springfield and hammer fired Sigs, Smith and Wessons and CZs.

They all shoot good but a 1911 is one of the real pleasures in life. JMB knew what he was doing.

They are great guns and a real pleasure to shoot.

It could also be a Swiss bolt action military rifle, the M1911.

Google exists for a reason. Look it up, and if you have more specific questions about it post again.

"...google you can learn many things or get an idea..."

And many of those things and ideas are fact.

Please get at least two other confirmations of your web-found "fact" before you bet much more than pocket change on it.

That said, you can get some good directions and some very well-vetted information on reliable venues like The Firing Line.

This is the best location for good and reliable information about firearms.

I'd search here (correction, I do search here) before a general search on the web for any firearm-related information.

I usually only seek one other confirmation for info I get off TFL .

In short, you've come to the right place.

Will

The problem is, "1911" is EXTREMELY in-exact, so there's no way to tell you exactly what it is.
It would be sort of like saying, "What exactly is a car?" I could tell you it's a motorized vehicle, but even some things that would normally be assumed, such as four wheels, two of which are driven by an internal combustion engine, etc., don't really apply, anymore.
"1911" has really come to mean a gun with a certain appearance, but nothing in particular can be assumed about materials, chambering, capacity, specifications, etc., based only on "1911".
The only two "1911s" about which there is anything exact are the M1911 and the M1911A1. You can find drawings with materials, dimensions, heat-treat specs, etc. Everything else is a crap-shoot.
