75 gr.HPBT bullet and Win748 powder (.223)
I have 3 or 4 reloading manuals and have been online to Winchester but cannot locate a proper starting load for loading 75gr. hpbt bullets with Win748 ball powder in .223 cases. I usually load 62 grainers with 25 grs. of Win748 and as I really like this particular powder I want to stay with it.
I am pretty conservative and not seeking hot loads, just a decent, safe starting point. I did load one round with 21.5 grs. of 748 behind the 75 gr. bullet mentioned, fired it in my AR and closely examined the fired case for signs of extreme pressure. It looked great but I did not fire for accuracy. If any of you have any info pertaining to the above, I sure would appreciate it. Like Pilots, there are no old + bold pilots or reloaders. Too bold and one doesn't get old. |

I'll check my Lyman 48th, I'm quite sure there is a load for that combo in there.

23.3 is a max in my data, as 748 tends to show some pressure issues at warmer temperatures. In my opinion there are far superior performing powders available, that are less temperature sensitive. If 748 is all you have, work up cautiously and watch your primers for excessive cratering and piercing.
Scroll down the page to some load data. Lots of other good stuff on the page and the site. http://www.radomski.us/njhp/cart_tech.htm |

Not sure what brand bullet you have? If it is Hornady my6th Edition Hornady manual shows for their 75 BTHP with Win 748 : 20.2 - 24.0

I certainly appreciate all of your input and you have been a great help. The bullets are Hornady by the way, 75Gr. BTHP Match #2279.
For the time being I will stick with Win748 but you can believe I won't load over 23.3grs. if that much. Now to see if I can get an idea about accuracy. Thanks a million...... |
