Bullet weights and load data

I have data for a powder with 167gr bullets. Can I use the same charge data for a 160gr?

Bullets are amax and....the hornady leverevolution plastic tips.

I would say that you would be safe to work up a load from the starting data for them.

The only time I would not advise it is loading lead free bullets for the equal weight lead core loads. The lead free are longer, and lighter.

Re: Bullet weights and load data

Thanks figured they were close enough weights, plus I'm going down in weight. Just wanted to confirm with all the wisdom here.

Firemoose,

I am guessing that you are talking about .308" bullets?

If so, the Hornady 8th edition loading manual says to use the 165 grain or the 165-168 grain load charts for several cartidges that take .308" bullets, but also provides different data for a few cartridges and no data for the leverevolution bullets in still other cartridges. Not exactly sure what to make of that. There are two 160 grain FTX bullets, with canelures in different places and slightly different ranges for muzzle velocities. That suggests to me that there are differences in the jackets between the two versions. Whether that has any significant effect on max loads, I don't want to guess.

If you tell me what cartridge and powder, I will look-up the data in the manual and post it for you.

Re: Bullet weights and load data

Yes its a .308.

I've got the 8th edition. And that's the problem I ran into (well one problem, the other is they don't list the FTX), no data for AA2460.

My Lyman 49 has data for this powder with 165gr but the oal is too long for my chamber. I really hate having to buy what I can find...

And unfortch, this is the only powder around my area right now. So far, not a huge fan but I'm only 80 rounds in. And 40 are unshot ha.

Not so fast..... My first "OOPS" with FTX's was thinking 160grs was 160grs..... longer soft tip on the FTX results in more bullet below the water line and less case volume....

I got hold of some 160's before I had FTX data specific to my 307 Win. I looked at conventional data(W748) for the 150 and 170 and figured the 160 was between. My "safe guess" for starting loads was more than warm, pressure signs before I got part way to max... quit and pulled the rest.... and I hadn't trimmed the case to .01" less than SAAMI as Hornady advises.

If you are seating to the cannelure in shortened cases to keep the length to SAAMI spec, your max will be a few grains less than conventional data suggests.

Re: Bullet weights and load data

Bullets are seated well below the cannalure. Ill post some photos once I get out to test these suckers.
