NY legal ar

A friend of mine took his ar to the state police barracks and showed it to them and to register if he had to..
The State Police told him that he didn't have to register since his is NY compliant. He removed the pistol grip and replaced it with a non pistol style grip and has no other features. What he has is an ar with removable magazine and no features.
All the local gun shows I have been to lately have had vendors selling NY compliant ar's.
Has anyone on here bought one or any of the different items that ar NY compliant ?

I just re-read the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, and it's pretty clear that all ARs are NY compliant.
