Mini 14 ranch assembly help

Got a used mini and shot it for the first time this weekend. Love it - no hiccups.

Disassembled to clean - but did not take down the slide stop assembly. Re-assembled and seems to cycle very smoothly. But it will not lock back on an empty mag. It does lock open when the bolt stop is pushed down.

Ideas? Also curious (probably a stupid ?) since I did not try this before cleaning. I put a partially filled mag in to cycle it but the first round would not eject. Symptom of the same problem or normal?
