quickie on the M1A
hello all, a little problem..gas piston plunger/ cap is too tight , am trying to remove it with 3/8 th socket..cast part I guess.havent tried the M 1A gadget..hard to turn cc..any advise? also can i get around cleaning the gas system..ie clean the piston part that sticks out into the guide rod only? Thanks. Alvin

Had the same problem with my M1A, no socket would break it loose. Got the combo tool, and it came right off...
whoops, the gadget is the keychain thing, the COMBO TOOL is what you need, and a gas cylinder wrench. You know its time to clean the piston by first locking the slide back, then inverting the rifle a couple times while listening for the clunk of the piston sliding back and forth. No clunk? I can't imagine that you could do this without a tool called a gas cylinder wrench, which holds the gas system still while you turn the nut.

You can normally remove the gas cylinder plug without putting a wrench on the cylinder, but using too much muscle too often can damage the splines in the cylinder. It is easy to make a wrench from a piece of wood by just cutting out a "figure 8" shape to match the barrel ring and cylinder body.
I don't know the torque figure off hand, but you can tighten up the plug enough to hold without needing King Kong to take it out. Jim |

If I am not to late and you have not removed it. Do as Ledbetter said use a gas cylinder wrench. You can get one from Fulton Armory. $9.95+s&h you need one anyway for future use. www.fulton-armory.com If it dosen`t break free with hand pressure, hold the gas cylinder wrench with pressure in the reverse direction that you will be using your combo tool to remove the gas plug, using a small hammer give the combo tool a sharp rap, not so hard you will damage your combo tool. Use some WD40 as a pentrating oil will also help but make sure you remove any oil before reassembly.
