Problem is the OK legislature wussed out. If this thing is signed into law you will need a concealed carry permit to open carry. They cowtowed to the OK state police who claim the sky will fall if folks are allowed to open carry without a concealed carry permit.
BTW: There is no current OK law that outlaws open carry on ones private property. Been doing it for years. |

One good thing about this is,,,
It would eliminate the arbitrary enforcement of the brandishing laws that are used by some county DA's to discourage legal carry by CWP holders.
Accidental printing or showing of a carry weapon has been prosecuted very unevenly across Oklahoma. In Payne County the County Sheriff and the Payne County DA are notorious for treating accidental exposure of a carry gun as intentional brandishing. Passage of this law should stop those tactics in their tracks. At least I would hope so. Aarond .

We started with open carry and no concealed carry. In '94 we went to Shall Issue. In 2010 we went to Constitutional Carry. Take it, and keep fighting to improve it.

We started with open carry: The concealed carry law killed open carry.
This year the OK legislature passed their watered down version of open carry in order to head off a referendum that would have changed the OK Constitution to allow open carry. The OK legislature passed unrestricted open carry in 2010 knowing the governor, Brad Henry, would veto it. BTW: OK is the most corrupt place north of the Mexican border. Google up "justice for sale". I'm anxiously awaiting passage of this bill,,,
In reality I'm just bumping it back up so can locate the thread more easily.
I am trying to keep track of this bill,,, I really want it to pass. Again, I'll probably never carry openly,,, I just want to quit worrying about printing in my county. Aarond .

Based on the link from the original article it looks like the bill was passed by the House, amended and passed by the Senate. The amended version was rejected by the House and a conference requested. I know nothing about the state level but at the federal level this would mean persons from the house and senate get together to write a compromise bill that is then voted on by the House and Senate. If both pass the bill it goes to the Gov. If not it probably dies
There is a link to the amended bill on the link below. 91 pages, ouch. VA writes much more concise bills. Even the VA concealed carry law with all the caveats related to that sort of law is only a few pages. http://www.oklegislature.gov/BillInfo.aspx?Bill=Hb2522 |

I'm all anticipatory,,,
Man, being a non-legaleze speaker,,,
It's difficult to track any important info down. But it looks like the House and Senate must agree to some amendments. But I am patient,,, Let's see what my elected state guberment will finally do. Aarond .

The OK House passed SB 1733 last week. The house amended version of SB 1733 is what they originally passed to the Senate as HB 2522 with some of the senate changes. Long story short, The Senate gutted HB 2522 and sent it back to the House ( discussed above about the conference committee ) The House did the same thing and recreated what they originally passed to the Senate. SB 1733 is back in the Senate for approval. If it passes the Senate, off to Gov for signature or veto.

Yep, the good old OK legislature shafted us again. A few years ago the hypocritical legislature passed unrestricted open, no concealed carry permit required, carry knowing Brad Henry would veto it. The leadership of the OK legislature promised to pass the same bill again with a new governor, Mary Fallin. They lied to us.
This action by the OK legislature was milk sop to appease OKlahomans who want a referendum on open carry. Last edited by Tom Servo; May 10, 2012 at 09:14 PM. Reason: Removed intemperate language. |

Has anybody considered that....
Continuing this discussion, here a link in today's Houston Chronicle http://www.chron.com/default/article...or-3548697.php
Has anybody considered that carrying a pistol openly is more likely to make you a target to a predator? I carry concealed everyday, however I'm not about to open carry even if it was allowed. I think about all those newly release convicts that exit the cities bus stations all over the country. If they saw a 58 year old like me openly carrying all they would have to do is find a fist size rock, tuck it in their pocket and follow me to a nearby elevator, parking garage, office building hallway and from behind bash me in the head and pronto he has an untraceable gun and is back in business. Now we have an experienced/hardned criminal with a weapon on the loose. In my opinion open carry is a bad idea or at least a good thing carried too far. I'd like to hear what others think?

Well, Eppie, based on the scenario you provided, it boils down to situational awareness and common sense. That's what it's all about anyway. Isn't it?
I think what the OK legislature has done is okay. Like others, I'm waiting to see what Governor Fallin will do...

Eppie...OC does not expose you to any more danger than does carrying concealed. That is an uban myth..actually, IMHO, the reality is, OC exposes you to less danger as the criminal that would do you harm is put on notice that you are able to defend yourself.
It has worked that way for me for over 40 years, and the one time someone was aggressively looking to do me harm, (That I know of for sure) when he saw my carry, he left...in a great hurry...and my carry never left it's holster. |

I've said it before,,,
and I'll say it again,,,
No more accidental brandishing charges. This may not seem like too big of a deal to some,,, But some county DA's in this state are very predatory,,, They've told their county sheriff's to cite whenever possible. It's their personal method to discourage carrying. As soon as Governor Fallin signs it,,, I'll be a very happy camper,,, Waiting for November. Aarond .
