cci sized nipples?

I've found a grand total of three cans of Remington #10 caps in four counties, but everybody seems to have cci #10's...the LGS 2 miles from me has two cases of the things that I won't buy because they never fit.

other than sanding my nipples on all the guns down to take the cci's, I wish someone would actually manufacturer a nipple that takes the darned things!

I believe Treso makes them.

from what I understand #10 is for ball and cap pistols. most rifles should use number 11 caps...

then again I'm an amateur when it comes to muzzle stuffers

between my brother in law, my brothers and I we have about 8 muzzle loaders and they all use 11s, my brother in law has a ball and cap pistol and it uses 10s

From what I see with caps I have, smallest to largest, #10 CCI, #11 CCI, #11 rem, #10 rem. I know, it makes no sense. This is just what I've seen. I currently have a few thousand caps in the above sizes, I know how they fit on different nipples. I find rem #10 to be the best fit for everything revolver except the 1851 Pietta made in '74, it likes CCI #11. I realize that from lot to lot etc, the caps vary. Also have some 1075 caps, just got those, haven't tried them yet. My 1858 will fire with pretty much any cap. Real strong main spring.(ASM, imported through CVA, 1990) The ROA, with ampco nips likes #10 rem. Those nipples are supposed to be for #11 CCI. My NAA .22 is also supposed to to take #11. CCI #11 will not fit. Causes the cylinder to bind. #10 rem fits and fires without a problem. Buy Treso nipples and see what works. YMMV. I haven't been doing this all that long. Ten years or so, others know much more than I.
My .02. Best luck.

My order of cap sizes from smallest to largest goes like this: RWS #55, CCI#10, CCI#11, RWS#1075, Rem#10, Rem#11. Half of my guns will take the CCI#11, half will take the RWS#1075 but ALL of them will take the Rem#10 or I buy the TOW SS, Uncle Mikes SS replacement nipples to make them fit. The CCI#11s are the closest to the Rem#10 just not as forgiving as to nipple fit. The REms are pre split and of thinner copper so they swell upon seating and grab a greater variety of nipple shank sizes. The CCIs are not pre split and are harder to seat but fit quite a few different guns and are more available.

Based on measurement of at least 20 samples of each brand and size:

However, don't let three decimal places fool you. You don't get repeatable three decimal place precision for 4 cents each. These numbers vary from batch to batch. Once you think you've got them figured out, you're bound to get a batch that doesn't fit.

Friendship, during the Spring Nationals. I buy 'em by the thousands every time I go. Didn't buy any last year, so maybe they've gone up there too.

Nope, they were still 40.00 a thousand. I got another 10,000 to go with the
10 thousand I already had. I'll be there again in June.

I use CCI #11's and RWS 1075's. ONLY because I get them locally. With my Pietta NMA Sheriff (<the range hound) I have to put the Ted Williams capper down and put the nipples on by hand with a pinch to get them to fit tight. No cap jams etc. But it sure would be nice to use a capper. I still have yet to buy new nipples. I'm too caught up in buying guns

A day after I posted this, I made a last ditch effort and drove a county away to a larger LGS and found a thousand Remington #10's and bought them all at $6/can.

Hey Hawg, the same gun store that had the Remington caps also had RWS 1075's for $4/can...they, too, work great on the Dragoon.

Hawg, my favorite LGS sells 100 piece tins of Rem #10 for $3.95. CCI #11 for $6.99. Another LGS sells both for $10-$12 a 100 piece tin. Yet another place sold me 1000 CCI #209s for $16.

Mykeal, thanks for the measurements. I guess going by sight and feel I was pretty close. Your measurements say that #11 CCI and #11 rem is the same. Perhaps the rem seems larger because of the thickness of the cap material, and its ability to expand easier? Are the #11 rems split like #10s? That could be it also. Haven't used #11 rems in a long time.
And of course different lots of the same size don't match up.

NE Redneck,
The Rem #10s and #11s are the same DIAMETER but the #11s are shorter in order to grip fatter cones (larger nipples). A smaller nipple will get gripped farther down the shank with the longer #10 and thus is considered a "smaller" cap.

I paid five something for my last Remington 10's but that's been awhile.

Hellgate, good point. Got it. I guess I saw it differently, but your explanation makes perfect sense.

Hawg, I bought some couple weeks back. Last they had. With any luck the price won't go up to much with the next shipment they get.
