Point of 590A1 heavy barrel?

I really like the 590A1 Mossberg shotguns I've seen, but don't understand the point of the heavy barrels on them. For a combat shotgun, what are the benefits of this over a standard barrel? I would just as soon have a standard barrel with a heatshield. Thoughts?

If you contact Mossberg, they will tell you that the heavy barrel is designed for extended shooting and heavy use, and the extra steel helps keep the barrel cooler than the thinner steel.
Not to protect the barrel should it get clogged with mud, dirt, snow or bits of zombie flesh... or that it will better tolerate being used as a bludgeon.

That's what Mossberg will tell you...

Heat dispersion and combat scenarios would be my guess. I love that gun! It is my HD choice.

The heavy barrel would withstand military abuse better than the standard weight. I also imagine it makes a better platform for using a bayonet.

Neither reason means much to me, so like the OP I prefer the standard weight barrel. The gun is plenty muzzle heavy as it is with the extended mag.

I also guess this thicker barrel will resist getting warped when accidentally wrapped around a tree or other structure...

Wouldn't a heaver barrel help in a quicker re-acquisition of your target...or am I just not thinking that threw? Would some one set me straight on this?

I don't know that the extra weight would be justified with less than a stellar reacquisition improvement... At least I doubt it would be worth it to me as an individual anywho

Well, the extra weight does lessen recoil, but every time you move the shotgun you have to overcome the inertia of all that weight, so there's a definite trade off. Shotgun handling is all about balance and a 7 round magazine filled with shotshells already makes for a pretty barrel heavy gun. There's no need to make it more so with a heavy barrel.
