Hornady SST Info

I am wanting to try these bullets out in my 30-06 and 165gr. I use H4350 and CCI 222 primers with R-P brass and Federal. Would someone look up the starting and max loads information? I do not have the Hornady book and my loading manuals do not list an SST. Thanks, Tim

Hornady SST bullets are standard cup-and-core bullets, so the starting information at the Hodgdon website would be my first choice.

Let's see: IMR-4350 - .30-06, 165 bullet. Start 56.0 Max 60.0C.

I like Hornady SST bullets and load them in several calibers. They've become my go-to hunting bullet. Very accurate, very uniform. They're really great bullets.

I use them in my .243 and my 30-06. I've never shot anything with them but they have a lot of good reviews. I'd guess they would do fine.

30-06, 165gr Hornady SST, CCI 200 Primer, 48.3gr Varget
.243, 95gr Hornady SST, CCI 200 primer, 35gr Varget

Works for me.

Hornady 8th manual: Win model 70 23 3/4" barrel 1/10 twist-- 30-06
-tested with Hornady case, Fed 210 primer
-165 gr. SST bullet # 30452 seated at 3.230" oal
-Hodgdon H4350 powder
start 48 grains--2400fps
52.3------------2600
54.5------------2700
56.7------------2800
maximum 58.9---2900

I use 165gr SST's in my .308 and took my first deer with it last year. 43.8gr of varget, remington brass, cci primer. Im told the first shot would have done it if I had waiting since the deer got up but didnt run, but being my first deer I kept shooting till he stopped trying to get up and started rolling down the hill..... I was not able to recover any of the bullets, as none of them stayed in, first hit grazed the spine in the upper neck, he went down, then got back up and stood there, second shot went through his chest just below the heart and lungs, he went down again, then got up and ran about 10 yards and stopped, 3rd shot nearly took off one of his front legs and he rolled 50 yards down the hill.... Sounds like poor shooting I guess, but it was at 250 yards, and my first deer ever so the adrenaline was pumping so hard I could barly hold the rifle still, and shooting off hand, plus I had wrongly gaged it to be only 200 yards.... This year I have a leather sling I will be practicing with so can be more steady, and a rangefinder....

Anyway, despite my less than perfect shooting, the SST's did the trick... I will be using them again this year, and I am about to start working up a load with the same bullet and powder for my dad's 30-06 remington 742. In my edge they shoot into about 3/4 moa. I worked up a load for my uncles 50 year old .300 savage with 150gr SST's and managed to get about 1.5" groups, which I guess is pretty good for the rifle.

Thanks for the info. I was also going to use the GMX for hunting and use the SST's for target and sighting in but may use them for hunting also. Tim

The SSTs are all I have hunted with in the last maybe 10 yrs. accurate and devastating.
