IMR 4227...What Is Its Best Use?
About 3 years ago, I picked up 4 lbs of IMR 4227 with intentions of using in some .44 Magnums with 240 grain cast SWC. I never did so. Well, now I am trying to find the best use for this powder instead of letting it just sit.
I reload for .38 Special (2" and 4" barrels), .357 Magnum (2 3/4", 4", 6" barrels), .44 Magnum (4" and 6 1/2" barrels), .45 Colt and .454 Casull (2 1/2" barrel). Would any of these calibers and barrel lengths be a good choice for IMR 4227? If so, which ones, what powder charge, what weight of cast bullet, etc.? Thanks

I've used IMR4227 in .357mag, .44 mag and .460 S&W. It is my preferred powder in .460 so I would assume it would work well in .454. It really shines in the .357 and .44 carbines. It may not give you the fastest velocities, but for me it's very accurate and is less temperature sensitive than H110/W296. One of my favorite plinkin' loads for the .357 revolvers/carbines is IMR4227.

Any small capacity cartridge.
It was one of the ones I experimented with for the .221FB (narrowly losing out to L'il Gun), and it appears to be one of the standards for .30 Carbine.

I say magnum pistol loads, unless you start loading for something like .22 Hornet, I works quite well with 40 to 55 grain bullets in .218 Bee as well.
I tried it in .41 mag. Loads shot with decent results. Though I switched to AA#9 and it works well enough I have stuck with it.

IMR 4227 is the best powder for the .351 Winchester SL. Also good in rifle loads for .44-40 and .38-40.

The best use I've ever found for IMR-4227 is in the Savage MLII muzzleloader , it works awsome .

Was having trouble looking for good load for my original Vaquero when I remembered Taffin using this load and saying if it doesn't shoot with this load it just won't shoot (paraphrasing)... Tried it, and the Vaquero liked it. So did my other .45s. Only reason I don't use it as much now is the 20g of powder . Eats through a can pretty quick!
.45 Colt 20.0g IMR 4227, 255g SWC, CCI-350, 1030fps, 18 SD, 69 ES, 29 shots .44Spec 17.5g IMR 4227, 240g SWC, CCI-350, 1047ps, 14 SD, 51 ES, 28 shots Tried a bunch of loads in .44Mag, but didn't mark any as 'accurate' in my table. Ie, nothing stood out from 17.0g (1009fps) to 23.0 grains.(1250fps) in .5g increments. In .357, I have 10.2g IMR 4227, CCI-550 under 158g SWC as accurate at 902fps. Went all the way up to 14.0g (1092fps) but again nothing else marked accurate in my tables. YMMV.

I have used it in subsonic loads of 300 Whisper/200-221 Fireball/300AAC Blackout.
Does OK but I eventually ended up using either Lil'Gun or VV 110 as they give me lower ES and seem less temperature sensitive. |

I like IMR4227 in my 44 mag S&W. Milder loads than my hunting loads (W296) but still a slow burning powder that gives me a similar feel when target shooting.

Cast bullets in .30-30, .308, and .30-06 are great with 4227.

IMR4227 was a good performer in my .41 mag and in a special old bolt action Savage .32-20 it was my best performer for speed and accuracy. I would be willing to bet it would be a good performer in the .327 Federal as well.

IMR 4227
Good day to all; I recently bought a 1983 vintage Winchester 94 Wrangler in 32 special. It is iin excellent condition but rather than put it away at my age, I intend to shoot it with cast bullets. I'm hoping my caster friend has that RCBS 32-170 mold everyone else is talking about.
My question is I have a bunch of IMR 4227 that I didn't like for leaving kernels in my Rossi 92 45 colt rifle; Does anyone have any experience or loads using this powder for cast 32 special ? My caster friend bullets are about 12 on the bhn scale. I should also ask if anyone would know what bore diameter these almost last production 32 special winchesters came with? I have no experience slugging a bore and am probably at an age that I shouldn't do it myself. I can add that I am over 100 miles to the nearest gunsmith. Many thanks Gentlemen and Merry Christmas to all. Doc. |
