S&W 39-2 sight adjustments
I have a S&W 39-2 pistol that shoots low and to the left. The pistol groups rather well, but the bullets do not hit where you aim it. If I ever find myself in a postition that requires marksmanship, I'd rather not have to think about adjusting my aim to hit my target.
To that end I am trying to adjust the sights. I've found the windage adjustment, but I can't seem to figure out how to adjust the elevation. Anybody got any suggestions? I would love to hit what I aim at, at least within the limits of my abilities.

The SCSW shows the 39-2 as having a windage adjustable only rear sight.
What bullet weight are you shooting? Jim |

115 grain.
Just to offer some additional information, at 25 feet the impact point is covered by my hand and pistol while in a shooting position. That converts to approx. 2.5 inches low and at least 2 inches left. I cant even see the point of impact, and that is not ideal to say the least.

My first suggestion is to let someone else shoot it and see if they get the same result.
If it also shoots low with them you have a few options. Going to a heavier bullet, 124 or 147 will raise the point of impact. You could also buy a rear sight that allows elevation adjustments, such as the one on the model 439. Or, less desirable but cheaper, you could file down the front sight which would also raise the POI. But, I highly suggest letting someone else try it first just to make sure it's not something you're doing. Jim |

Is there any way to raise the rear sights, maybe with a shim, spacer, etc...?

No, the rear sight is a insert & turn types..
arrangement. Shimming will not work.
Move the rear sight in the direction to move the impact to aiming point. Raising the impact would require the lowering of the front sight. Not sure if S&W service center would consider redoing it??? My 39's were POA/POI using 124 gr ammo. |

Smith & Wesson did make fully adjustable sights for the 39-2 but they are becoming more difficult to find these days.

olddav - Numrich had them at one time but they are currently sold out. Keep checking back with them.
http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/...580&catid=9881 I got my sight from a seller on the S&W Forum. Disco - No, the pictured sight is not for sale. Last edited by jsbethel; August 12, 2010 at 11:40 PM. |
