New ammo, old rifle

My shooting buddy just bought a 1894 winchester in .30-30 that was made in 1896. It is in nice shape and solid and he wanted to know if it's safe to shoot new made, off the shelf ammo in it. I didn't know if he could, so I'm asking here. Thanks.

I figured it was, since the .30-30 was always a smokeless round but I wasn't sure. Thanks.

Likely is safe but before you shoot it get it checked over by a gunsmith, it is over 100 years old.
