new gun choice
alright i have been debating on a new rifle to get. i want something that i can get lots of cheep ammo, caliber of .223 or larger. low maintinance, short (carbine) so i can throw it in the tractor or back seat of a ranch truck, and fairly accurate...say i could kill a yote' at 200 yds easily. and i only have 500 bucks to spend. what are my options? i have thought about an ak with a folding stock, to mini-30/14's. just got rid of an SKS because its to big and bulky to pack around and so is my AR. have lots of 7.62X39 laying around and 223. throw me a bone here

Have you considered the Paratrooper model of SKS? The barrel is 4" shorter and with an ATI folding stock you can get it to about 8 lbs.
A 200 yard shot with deadly and consistant accuracy might be a slight stretch though. 150 yards or less would be more reasonable for most 16" barrel carbines. Ruger Mini? Maybe a little more money, and mine doesn't fit the "throw in the truck" scenario. It's too nice! |

Ruger made the M77 in 223 and 7.62X39, Zastava short rifles (Interarms Mini-Mausers, Charles Daly, or Remington 799) are available in either caliber, and Remington makes the Model 7 in 223. Any one of those will tip the scales at about 6 lbs with a scope on it, any one of them will do very well out to 300 yds or more.
