300 win mag troubles...

ok well I have a new 300 win mag, i believe the rifling is 1:11.25" i cant find it on the barrel or box. (the rifle is a remington 700 r5)

well the only loads that i have been able to work out are 77gr of re-22 behind a 168gr smk, and 77gr re-22 behind a 155gr nosler match bthp, both sub moa.

I am trying to work out a good hunting load, and i cant get 180gr bullets to stabilize 2-3" at 100yds.

any suggestions?

right now i have 165gr sierra game kings hitting about 8-10" at 600yds.

The 1/11.25, (if that is what you have), according to barrel maker Lilja’s chart, is ideal for bullet weights from 150 to 200 gr It may also shoot as 130’s and as high as 225’s. Shilen’s chart says 165 and up.

You might try a different powder. Although I got better velocities with RL-22 and IMR 4350, but much better accuracy with IMR 4831 at/near max with 165 to 200 gr bullets.

For a hunting bullet, I settled on Nosler 200 Partition. Surprisingly, the 200 Partition worked very well for long distance antelope in windy conditions.

USCG,

If your 700SS 5R is a 300WM factory rifle, the barrel should be a stainless 26 inch 1:10 twist with a 5 land "R" configuration land.

The 1:11.25 twist is used in the .308Win rifle.

The 1:10 will shoot up to 220 grains or more very well. I too have had my best accuracy using H4831SC.

Remington uses 1 in 10 for their .300 Win Mag barrels. Won't be on either the box or barrel.

I have had good results with the 200 gr Accubond and RL22. In my Remington it is very accurate. Excellent performance on both Elk and Deer. I prefer the heavier bullets in the magnum. The thin skinned 165 grainers, (ballistic tips), perform well at distances over 100 yds but if a critter gets in close the high velocity of the magnum can make them come apart. Killed the deer, but not without making a mess.

SD is right on target. A standard bullet, light for caliber, at 3000fps plus will make a mess. Try 180 Hornday IB and Nosler Partition and Bonded.

Might want to try H1000 -I had excellent results with that powdernwhen I used to reload my 300. You also might want to try hodgdon hybrid V100. It was not out when I was re,loading my 300 but the burn rate falls between 4831 and 4350 which would be ideal for a 300

Like the other guys said try some IMR4831. I had good luck with that powder, but IMR7828 did not shoot as good in my rifle. It's just a matter of trying some different powders.

I'm having very good success with 71 gn. RE19 behind 180 gn. Accubond out of a Ruger #1.

thanks a lot

that is a big help i couldnt find the rifling twist anywhere, and im not too particular about the terminal damage to the meat, i'm mainly just doing some pest control on coyotes and javelina, maybe the stray rabbit or hog thrown in. love the rifle so far, and the 165 grain sierra match king hollow points did alright, i got about 10" at 600yds and that was probably mostly me, and from the look of it i only had about 58-62" of drop from a 100yd zero which is about 8-10" better than i expected.

I use 67.0 of H414 or WW760 and a 168 match bullet. If you use 180s, try the Sierra and IMR 7828. The 4831s are OK, but my best stuff is loaded with RL22 and 7828. YMMV.

OK man this is what I load for my 5r in a 300wm.get you some 208gn A-max's or 210gn Bergers.then a keg of H1000 and load some cases with 74gns and work up in .3gn imcrements to 76gn's.I am all so useing a 215m primer with Remmy brass.even seatting the bullets .010 off the lands.if I am not wrong the coal is around 3.600.

my first loadd was at 76gn's that gave me 4.5" groups at 500 yards.now thats not a great 5 shoot group but the loaded rounds wasn't loaded BR style either.

but now I have just got my hands on some more of the 208gn A-max's.so I am going to work up another load for that bullet useing the same powder(H1000)will have to post results when I get the chance.

cannot say anything about a lighter bullet.I like the 308win for the lighter ones.but will add that a good friend of mine who passed away likes a 165gn NBT useing 73gn's of IMR4831 with the bullet just touching the lands.he even got 3100fps with that load.and could shoot it out to 300 yards with a dime covering the group.but that was his rifel in a Remmy 700 300wm.

like all have said already just get some bullets and powder and try many loads till you are happy.
