trying to identify a shotgun
I have a 12ga pump shotgun that I can not identify. It is a pump. Has a squared off back like a Browning. Has a safety on back right before stock starts that slides back and forth. On the top of the reciever when you work the pump action there a a sqaure part of metal that drops out and comes back when you finish working the action.

Are there any markings on it that look sort of like words?
Based on verbal description, I think you have a Stevens Model 520. |

Stevens Model 520-30, most likely. It was also sold as a "Storebrand" my Montgomery Wards.

Good. 520s are fine shotguns.
Treasure yours, and enjoy... |
