Heat Shield on Remington 870's????

got one on yours?

do the heat shields that are available on the market for the Remington 870's, fit on any of the 870 barrels?

also, how do they actually mount? does it require any drilling or tap setting?

i am curious how one would work on my 870 18" barrel.

help me if you can.

I have at one time or another had shrouds on a couple of scatterguns. In the Navy I had a wonderful M1912 with a military heatshield. It also had a MMC divert stuck on end. It looked very cool.

I ended up in one of those 3 way trades with a nice 870 police mag with a
clamp on shroud. Just like the one for sale in Brownells today, light weight sheetmetal, a little cheesy for my taste.

Most heat shields/shrouds that I see are front band clamp on and require no alteration of the barrel, they only work for no-vent rib barrels. There are some military types that use a clamping pin sometimes requiring a little mod to the barrel.

we know the obvious use for this item, the drawbacks are keeping dust bunnies out of barrel area and keeping rust proof on the barrel. If the front clamp comes loose it could lock up the action by binding the action bars.

Most, if not all are more or less universal fit clamp on units.

Frankly what is on the market is mostly if not all cheap junk in my opinion speak poorly of the person who feels the need for one.

i have concluded after further insights, experiences, and opinions sought, that i will be forgoing this potential add-on to my Remy 870.

if it is going to scratch up the barrel, then count me out.

I looked at the metal shields and they are on the cheesy side. I found a glass filled nylon shield that has a double clamp at the front, so far I like it. With the side saddle attached I have a tendency to grab the barrel just in front of the receiver. That gets hot after several rounds. A plus was the nylon was easy to cut for my rifle sights.

The Mossberg factory heat shields are the best I've seen. Heavy steel with a strong front clamp.

I have that plastic one, great for when your gun falls down, hels not scrape the barrel
