you might want to wander over to the Marlin Collector's Association:
http://www.marlin-collectors.com/forum/index.php

There is a "guest" section there, where unregistered users can make posts.

It will be best if you give a COMPLETE description in the first post, as to barrel shape, length and ALL Markings in COMPLETE detail.
Also any and all markings on any other metal parts.
Note the top of the receiver...any D&T holes and do they go through any letters if they are there.
Also the shape of the pistol grip and a description of the butt plate..
Does the buttstock have the Marlin bullseye??

Pictures (Close up) are a HUGE benefit!!

I know the HS prefix to your rifle's serial number means it was manufactured (and not later upgraded) with the high-speed bolt, for high velocity ammo (NOT Stingers/etc).
Earlier versions were for standard velocity ammo, only - upon pain of cracking the bolt.
