question about new barrel options
My son and i are building an old Mauser 98 action I had laying around and I just got it back from the smith today and have a question. The barrel I got is "in the white". Now that I have it back it looks bad a$$ with the shiny barrel and blued action is there something I can coat the barrel with to prevent rust or do Shoul I have it blued. I live in AZ so humidity isn't a huge problem but I don't want it to rust either. If I need to blue it is there a descent option other than sending back to a smith that I can do at home?

If you want to leave it white, clean it well, and give it a couple of coats of clear coat. That's about all you can do without having it blued.

Since this post, I just checked an old Miller Falls antique hacksaw that I restored, and have been using for about a year, which I did this too, and there is no rust showing yet. I used two coats on it, after I polished it, then cleaned it well with a solvent, before the clearcoat.
