Winchester 12 gauge Target for HD

I have a box of Winchester Target 12 gauge, will they work for home defense?

Target loads are nomally...

7 - 1/2 size shot. Actual diameter is : .017 -7.5 = 0.095"

In a close -in situation, (room area) they are good in a pinch.

Going to a heavier shot, #2 & #4 is better and then move up to the buckshot,

00 (0.33"), O (.3") , #1 -#4 (0.25")

For HD, best use the buckshot.

another buckshot vs birdshot thread! Yay!

Are you too cheap to spring for a box of buckshot?
How much is your life worth to you?

Will they work? Perhaps..

Buckshot for bad guys
Birdshot for birdies
Repeat

If you consider the FBI ballistic gelatin testing guidelines then the minimum would be #4 buckshot which barely makes the grade.

Buck will certainly work better, but it will also penetrate walls in your home and enter other rooms. You'd better hit the guy with that buck, or he better not be standing in front of your kid's room if you miss. For what it is worth, I am a retired cop and I HAVE seen fatalities from birdshot wounds. At 15 feet, the blast is hideous. Faster follow up shots, too.

They tested this stuff on Personal Defense TV. Birdshot offered the least amount of penetration... followed closely by 55 gr FMJ from a .223 carbine.

Buck shot and all pistol rounds penetrated all three walls and exited the simulated house they had set up for the penetration test.
