I stopped by my local gun store with exactly $430 dollars, looking for something to jump out at me. At first i was looking at S&W and ruger snubs, and was about to buy one, when my eyes found this:

Smith and Wesson 10-9. I found no significant wear or problems with it when inspecting. I've taken it to the range a few times-works beautifully. Hard hammer strikes, smooth trigger, accurate, etc.

The store owner wanted $400.00 for it, which was high, but i had to have it.

How did i do?

it's good to know that i didnt eat it with the price. I had seen various model 10s on the market for around $300, so i wasn't sure. But yes I'm well aware of this classic model's reputation

I am extremely happy with it. As far as handguns go, of all the various models and cailbers i've rented (bout semi-auto and revolver) nothing fires more naturally for me than a standard pressure .38 special in a medium sized revolver.

Granted, i was a bit apprehensive about the caliber at first... I wanted a +P for the knowledge that i could go a little bigger if i wanted to. That is, until i put some random junk to the test up at the mountain. I sent several rounds through a car radio (aluminum, but hefty and durable nevertheless) and they ripped right through one side and left a dent on the other than protruded about an inch... wicked.

Nice gun, but you paid way too much. A nice used Model 10 with a 4" barrel shouldn't cost more than $250-300 tops. Join Gunbroker and you can do searches on completed auctions to get a realistic idea of what guns are actually selling for.

Perfect choice for a first firearm. . .for any firearm for that matter. That looks just like the 10-5 I picked up a few days ago. Don't they just shoot amazing!

I haven't seen a $250 M10 for a few years. In my AO a clean M10 well run $325-375. There are some on Gunbroker that have sold fairly cheap but you have to add the shipping and ffl, so figure another 50-75 bucks to that price.

Don't feel you paid to much, you just bought to soon.

The Model 10s with pencil barrels like this one probably balance better for me than any other revolver, maybe any handgun period. Congratulations on a quality handgun.

Good job! I have a victory and it points and shoots nice. I don't think you paid to much, I've been looking for a model 10 and its hard to find them for that cheap in this area. Like someone else said with transfer and shipping it'll come close anyway.

I have to differ with that statement being that it depends what part of the country one lives in will reflect the difference in gun prices. A friend in PA has stated to me many times out in the country handguns are cheap as compared to rifles because of the hunting crowd. Now comes the end of hunting season and some real good deals come up on rifles with the folks that realize that hunting is not there bag. just another opinion here.

Well Don, if it wasn't for Gunbroker, I would have to agree with you, but it's a national (and sometimes international) resource for firearms. I've been generally very pleased with what I've bought there, it's important to look at the pictures and read the text for what's not there as well as what's there. I often ask questions of sellers to get clarifications.

You did fine, there are two model 10's in the shop I go to, one is pretty beaten up and listed at $300 and the other which is in similar condition to yours is $400. Now go shoot and enjoy that thing!

BTW, since it is a .38 SPL, maybe it's time that someone mentioned reloading....
