Used S&W 5906

I was checking the used pistol selection at the shop next to work. They have a used S&W 5906 in stock with 1 15 round mag for $350.00

I'm assuming that's about a fair price, correct me if I'm wrong.

Second, I'm looking at trying to do a trade for it with my Kel Tec PF9.

I'd say a fair guesstimation would be that they give me $150.00 for the Kel Tec leaving me $200.00 in cash to come up with.

I've shot a couple Smiths in the past and they felt very comfortable. The PF9 is my current carry piece, but it was never comfortable to shoot.

Should I go for it? I'm planning on stopping by during lunch on Monday just to see what they would say.

5906 = 38 oz. unloaded
PF9 = 13 oz. unloaded

That's (ahem) about 3 TIMES heavier... Just so you know...

Weight doesn't bother me, I've toted my Hi Power around in the past. I'll probably buy a good shoulder rig, 3 Mec Gar 17 round mags, and call it a day if I get the Smith.

Forgot to add, it's the wonky square trigger guard version. Any chance I can use that as leverage for beating the price down a little?

Not very important in itself... 'Course you can always try... Depends how bad the seller needs the $.

As much as I like the 5906, I would not use one for concealed carry. They are a little heavy for CC. Open carry, sure - with a good solid retention holster like an old school Safariland.

I would recommend a 5903 (SS slide w/alloy frame) or even a 915. Both are quite a bit lighter and you get the same quality & functionality as the 5906. Also, there is currently a flood of S&W 915's in the market as a result of police-trades. Some of these guns are pristine internally with a few wear marks on the outside. There are even some that are literally new on the outside as well. The 915's can be had for about $250.

With regard to your KT PF9 - You can probably get more than $150 if you sold it yourself. Depending on condition, $200 would not be unreasonable. I picked mine up NIB for about $270, including tax.

If you want something for carry try and find a 5903.

FYI there is an FFL dealer on Gunbroker who has multiple

5906s and Model 915s for under $300 buy it now price.

The pictured guns look good .
It's possible your dealer got one from the same wholesale lot.

Just search GB for used 5906 / 915

I have the 5906 as well as a number of other SW 9mm 3rd gen guns (5904, 6906, 6904, 3914) and have tried carrying the 5906 IWB. Besides being heavy it also has a long grip and tends to print too much for my comfort level. I have not tried a shoulder holster. It's a great duty, house or range gun. The price he's asking is about average assuming you wouldn't have to pay shipping and transfer fees as if you bought it off the internet.

The absolute best 9mm 3rd gen. SW for carry (in my opinion) is the 6904/6906 platform. You get 12+1 rounds, alloy frame and compact enough to hide easily. And they are usually available at a good price (I've gotten mine through Coles Distributing off Gunbroker). Many like the 3913/14 pistol as well- a slim, single stack 9mm but a bit too small for my large hands. Good luck.

best wishes- oldandslow

PS- working next door to a gun store can be a distraction and tough on the bank account. Wish I had one next door to my office.

I have both the 5906 and the PF9. While the 5906 is one of my favorite pistols to shoot and very accurate for me, the only time that I can comfortably carry it is OWB when trail walking in the state parks and other wooded areas. The PF9, on the other hand, is not fun for me to shoot and not greatly accurate for me past about 10 yards, but is always comfortable to carry and therefore always with me when legal.

The best world is to have both, but if forced to choose one, I would have to keep the PF9.

The 5906 is one of the greatest fullsize, all steel 9mm's ever made . If it's scuffed up a bit, ten seconds in a bead blasting cabinet can make it look brand new.

Most certainly.

Hey, wait a minute! As 10mm guy can you really say that?

Now wait just a cotton picking minute there. The Hi Power takes that spot.

The 5906 in question sold Saturday, the shop hadn't had a chance to update their used firearm listings on their web site.

Oh well, I shall keep on looking. After more thought on the matter, the PF 9 does disappear very well. I believe I shall hang on to it.

Top spot is debatable, but definitely in the top 5 for all steel 9mm's. Not to hijack the thread, but my list would be something like this...not in any particular order...

Sig 226
Beretta 92
S&W 5906
Hi Power
CZ 75

The Sig and Beretta are not steel, only the 5906, Browning and and CZ. All but the CZ are good guns though. I've had too many negative CZ experiences to recommend one.

There are tons of police trade in 5906's out there. Around $300-$350 with one mag seems to be the going rate and I'd bet this is one. I'd look it over closely. Most are in rough shape externally from being carried for years, but not shot enough to be worn out. Our local PD just traded in some for Glocks a few months ago. Some of those guns were over 20 years old. Some were rough looking, but in the 20+ years those cops carried the guns they never gave any problems.

My 2 cents

I have a 5906 (had a couple actually). They are a fantastic workhorse of a pistol. The price in my world is fine at $350. As far as trading the PF9 I doubt you will get $150. The LGS I use if very up frnt on trades. Book value at condition of gun X 60% or .6...so a used PF9 is worth about $200 at .6 = $120.
So maybe you can get the $150.
To add to what what others have posted I have a 5906..it's a great service (open) carry, trail, truck, home defense gun. I don't try to CC with it.
I carry a SW 659/6906,(SS/Alloy) 459/4506, (Blued SS/ Alloy)(Double stack) SW CS9 & .45, SW 3913 and 4513TSW all single stacks. All can be bought for $450 to $250 depending on which you like.
I carry all of them in a rotation as well as a Sig P239 in 357 sig.
My favorites at you price point is the 3913 and 659 or 6906. 659 is just a slightly older version of the 6906. The 6906 & 5906 were mfg concurrently.
My absolute favorites are the SW4513TSW and the Sig P239.. because I like bigger bangs
Good Luck.
