I have been out of re-loading a while, but when I did hand-load it was magnum .357's. A friend asked if I could load up some accurate .38's, target weight, low recoil.

The cast bullet I have to work with is a 142 gr. SWC.

Any thoughts?

Try 3.7 grains of Clays. You will have a bullet velocity of around 850 fps with mild recoil.

I use winchester 231 with winchester small
primers,3.5 grains with a 148 gr.bevel base wad-cutter, a Lee tumble lubed bullet I make myself from wheel weights, very accurate and
very low recoil in my 6" GP-100,I use a light
roll crimp just at the last lube groove.

Make sure you understand there are different loads for the bevel base wad cutter (bbwc) and the hollow base wad cutter (hbwc). The bbwc will take a heavier powder charge than the hbwc.

Hope this helps, Mikey

This is the closest thing I shoot:

Speer 148 gr HBWC over 3.1 gr of Win 231. Winchester or Remington primers.

I get 11/16" groups at 25 yds out of a S&W 6' Mod 14. Very mild recoil.

I have some 148g cast lead HBWC I am reloading.

How far in do I seat the bullet? I've seen factory loads that sit almost flush. What's the overall length supposed to be? My (rather poor) documentation does not have this information.

Thanks,
Rich
