30-06 question

I bought some nosler 165 gr. btsp bullets yesterday and would like to know if I can use IMR4895 powder?? my manual don't have it listed with the 165.gr round. I normally use 4350 but am out of it and the local shop is out too. I have a can of 4895 that has not been opened.

Recommendation

I reload 165gr Sierra HPBT with IMR-4895 with good results. For .30-06 Springfiled the Sierra manual recommends these muzzle velocity to IMR-4895 powder loads:
2400 - 40.5
2500 - 42.6
2600 - 44.7
2700 - 46.8 (maximum)

IMR-4895 is a versatile powder that I believe was developed for gas-operated military arms, specifically the M1 Garand. The powder works well in my .223 (bolt and semi-automatic), .243, and .30-06 reloads. Metering is a bit difficult with a conventional powder measure but since switching to a RCBS ChargeMaster that has ceased to be a problem.

IMR 4895 was developed around WWII and millions of rounds, up to the end of the military production of 30-06 were loaded with this powder. So yes, you can use it, and it will shoot very well.

I have a lot of data with AA2495, which is Accurate Arms copy of 4895. But I am not going to post that. I am currently using for target match shooting a load of 47.0 grains IMR 4895 with RA54 brass and CCI #34 primers, in a Garand. I have used the 47.0 grains load with 150’s, 168’s, and 175’s. It is not a hot load. So you should be use it as is with 165 grain hunting bullets.

I assume you are using this in a bolt rifle, so unlike my gas guns, you can increase the charge without worrying about damaging your gas system.

As a data point, this is what I got with 175 grain bullets. Not very hot at all.

Ruger #1 26" barrel

175 Sierra 47.0 IMR 4895 W/W Fed210S OAL 3.3"
19-Oct-04 T = 75 ° F
Ave Vel = 2535
Std Dev = 30
ES = 92
Low = 2487
High = 2579
N = 11
excellent accuracy

What rifle are you reloading for? If you are reloading for a M1 Garand, you need to read some of the Garand info because you could damage your op-rod with the wrong loads.
