Sig P226 - Watch this video and HELP !!!!!

This is a shooting demonstration of the Sig Sauer P226, and, unfortunately, also a look at the issues this pistol has been having. Fail to feeds, and front sight is off. I know the Sig P226 is a great pistol. My friend, who loaned me this pistol, and I, are trying to get to the bottom of why he keeps having problems with this P226

Here is the video. I welcome, no, covet, all comments and suggestions about what you think is going on. I bought my son this pistol for his 21st birthday and it has been nothing but a total PITA since then.

It malfunctions, frequently, with cheap bulk and more expensive ammo. It works great through several magazines, but then goes bat crap crazy with other magazines. I never have this problem with my Beretta or HK, not to mention my Glocks.

OK, here's the video:

Paul, you make great videos and you are a respectable shooter.

I wish you could run my old West German P226 - reliability and accuracy would be a completely different story.

I would love to.

Truth be told I bought this pistol for my son for his 21st birthday.

You can imagine how disappointed both he and I are.

A new P226 comes with a lifetime warranty. Contact SIG about having it looked at under warranty. Also some new SIGs are shipping with Checkmate magazines which some owners have reported problems with. I use ONLY Mecgar magazines in my SIGs.

You also might want to post on the SIGforum in the SIG Armorer section.

I have had my p226 for more than 15 years..... thousands of rounds thru her. The only malfunction I have ever had was a squib load from wolf wpa steel case. My wife got a bullet stuck in the barrel about 1inch in, either the was no powder or just too little. After pounding out the stuck bullet, it has again ran flawlessly.

This is of course like the OP, a sample one one pistol, maybe the OP just has a lemon.

I tend to think it's the magazine problem, not the gun.

I had a P226 that developed a feeding hitch after a few hundred rounds. I documented the problem well with writing and pictures and contacted Sig's customer service. They asked me a few questions about use and cleaning procedures, then had me ship the gun back so they could give it a look. I had it back within two weeks and it has been fine since. In my case, I am not sure they found one single smoking gun (no pun intended), but they re-profiled and polished several feeding and contact surfaces.

Thanks, I'll give the magazine a swap and then see what happens.

Are those factory grips? Sometimes Houge rubber grips can interfere with the mainspring. Happened to my early P229.

I bet it's the Checkmate mags.

I have a Sig 226 that was not made in Germany and I have no problems with it except the magazine doesn't lock back after the last round and I think that may be caused by my thumb

check this

First off, if you're not running SIG mags, which are Mec-Gars, you need to be.
MecGar started doing all of SIGs mags a few years back, and I have heard of no probs w/ them. If you have an older pistol with SIG mags, it is possible the mags have gone south, things do happen. HOwever.....

The video showed a stove pipe. That is typically an extract/eject problem and ususually not traced to bad mags. Pretty sure a stove pipe is the result of low slide velocity (in recoil). If the pistol is indeed lubed and cleaned and you are using factory ammo, then......

Check the recoil spring. SIG recoil springs have an open and a tight end, and the tight end should fit on the recoil spring guuide rod FIRST. Think Tight is right. I have seen a backwards recoil spring induce failures. Springs are cheap and an easy fix, and if the pistol has a round count on it that is very high at all, I would swap it out anyhow.

Also, the new grips could possibly bearing on the hammer main spring. Enough pressure there MIGHT slow or retard the hammer as it is cycled by the slide, inducing low slide speed as mentioned and thus a failure. Abstract, but possible.

Finally, inspect the ejector carefully, compare it to a new on, say on a shop pistol if you can, to see any difference on its face or configuration. Any diff in the face or the angle on the face, or length, I would swap that.

I'd do all this incrementally, so I'd know what effected what.

That SIG out to run like a top. Good luck

Looks like some good advice above - bamaranger really went in-depth. Thanks for that.

It must be disappointing to have problems with arguably one of the most reliable autopistols on the planet.

Keep us posted, Paul.

And, to add insult to injury, this pistol was my gift to my son on his 21st birthday....the guy I refer to as "my friend" in the video.

Will keep all posted.

I strongly suspect it is the magazine issue identified by a number of folks.

Thanks to all for the observations.

Unfortunately, no. I have not purchased the magazines everyone recommends. The general consensus was that it is/was a mag problem.
