Test Results for Swiss 7.5x55. 150 gr FMJ and 175 SMKs. IMR 4064, Win 760.

Ok, well I haven't actually gone out and tested the loads, but I am so stoked about finally loading up that shiney Swiss Brass that Pierre set up for us, I had to post early. Today is a beatiful day outside and I should go test the loads, but I am going motorcycle riding with a friend from church instead. Here are the stats for my loads, after I shoot them, I will post results with pictures of the groups. I can't wait! Good thing Veteran's day is tomorrow!

Load #1

Bullet: Sierra 175 gr. HPBT Moly
Powder: IMR 4064 (6 rounds @ 40.0 grs., 6 @ 41.1 grs., 6@ 42.0 grs.)
Brass: The Swiss Match stuff with the "T" stamped on it.
Primer: Federal GM210M
Trim Length: Not-trimmed, 2.175"
OAL: 2.965"

Load #2

Bullet: Sierra 150 gr. FMJ/BT
Powder: IMR 4064 (6 rounds @ 44.0 grs., 6 @ 45.0 grs.)
Brass: The Swiss Match stuff with the "T" stamped on it.
Primer: Federal GM210M
Trim Length: Not-trimmed, 2.175"
OAL: 2.900"

Load #3

Bullet: Sierra 150 gr. FMJ/BT
Powder: Winchester 760 (6 rounds @ 49.0 grs., 6 @ 50.0 grs., 6 @ 51.0 grs., 6 @ 52.0 grs.)
Brass: The Swiss Match stuff with the "T" stamped on it.
Primer: Federal GM210M
Trim Length: Not-trimmed, 2.175"
OAL: 2.900"

I predict the 175s will be most accurate. I have no idea how the 150s are going to do. I suspect they won't be that great, but I also was enthusiastic that Bill Simon would beat Gray Davis for the PRK Governor's race. I can always dream. When you have about 8500 150 gr FMJBT bullets, you might as well try a load of them with every .308 you have.

It is done.

Here are the results. My stupid version of Microsoft Picture It! 99 is acting up and keeps crashing on me when I attempt to add text, otherwise I would have labeled each picture. Since it won't let me, I will have to post the data below the pictures.

The day was great. Partly cloudy. Cool tempratures. I found a new spot to shoot at an old oil well location that had a level slab of concrete to set up my shooting table and chronograph on. Plus my wife decided to come along too. So hey, I can't complain about that.

Anyway on to the data. First group of the day...GP11.

GP11 at 100 yards. Ave Vel 2548 FPS. 4.192"

Sierra 175 gr. HPBT Match w/ 40.0 grains of IMR 4064 at 100 yards. Ave Vel 2319 FPS. 3.317"

Sierra 175 gr. HPBT Match w/ 41.0 grains of IMR 4064 at 100 yards. Ave Vel 2372 FPS. 4.492" or minus the one flyer 2.442"

Sierra 175 gr. HPBT Match w/ 42.0 grains of IMR 4064 at 100 yards. Ave Vel 2410 FPS. 5.442"

Sierra 150 gr. FMJ/BT w/ 44.0 grains of IMR 4064 at 100 yards. Ave Vel 2678 FPS. 4.067"

Sierra 150 gr. FMJ/BT w/ 45.0 grains of IMR 4064 at 100 yards. Ave Vel 2713 FPS. 2.317"

Sierra 150 gr. FMJ/BT w/ 49.0 grains of Win 760 at 100 yards. Ave Vel 2629 FPS. 3.692"

Sierra 150 gr. FMJ/BT w/ 50.0 grains of Win 760 at 100 yards. Ave Vel 2644 FPS. 4.442" or minus the one flyer 2.067"

Sierra 150 gr. FMJ/BT w/ 51.0 grains of Win 760 at 100 yards. Ave Vel 2697 FPS. 1.942"!!!

Sierra 150 gr. FMJ/BT w/ 52.0 grains of Win 760 at 100 yards. Ave Vel 2728 FPS. 3.692" or minus the two flyers 1.067"

So my conclusions at the end of this testing was that the Sierra 150 gr. FMJ/BT that I bought bulk (10,000!) from Graff and Sons are fairly accurate in my K-31. I think I just had some operator error with the 175 gr. bullets. The one thing I would do differently when loading up a good sized batch of the 150 gr. FMJ/BT with some Win 760 is that I would seat them a little further down. When closing the bolt on the K-31 I really had to rap it forward. I have them seated at about 2.900". The book recommends 2.890" if I recall correctly.

Your comments are welcome. I hope you enjoy this data half as much as I enjoyed brining it to you.

Dude! This rocks! A buddy of mine just gave me an absolute gem of a K-31 as a "thank you" for my help in fixing his well house (crunched by a tree limb). He also gave me 100 brand new Norma cases. As soon as I get some dies, I'm going to give your loads a try. Thanks!

Rojo,
Thanks for shearing your information with us and I wonder if you can step a little forward and letting us know your chronograph data, such as standard deviation, extreme spread etc.
Thanks again

Don't stop experimenting yet, El Rojo!

I've found my 1911 Schmidt Rubin (predecessor to your K-31) likes the 168gr Sierra MatchKings, on top of 42.0gr of IMR4895. That's using Norma brass and Federal 210M primers. My velocities are gonna be different than what your K-31 generates, by virtue of the 30" barrel of the 1911.

Honestly, I don't feel like making all of this below all stylishly correct. Here are the basic info you are going to want to know. Date, Manufacturer, Weight, Bullet Type, Powder. Then it goes to S1 - S12, which simply means shot number. So the last 4 digit number is going to be the Average, then Range, Standard Deviation, Low, and High. If you want, I will send you the Excel file. UnoMauser, your e-mail is already on its way. Just ask me and I will share. Enjoy.

El Rojo is my new handloading hero.

LOVE the pictorals, El Rojo! Extremely informative.

It's instructive that you can clearly stick with the 150g FMJs and quit spending money on the match bullets. It's also interesting that, for the most part, the hotter you went with the 150s, the tighter the groups were.

I got to shoot my K-31 Wed. night! Man do I love this rifle!

I am not a great rifle shot, but this thing is phenomenal. I was using the Swiss military ammo that came with it, and with open sights I was blasting little pieces of clay birds off the bank @ 80+ yds.

As soon as I can afford a set of dies, I'm going to try these loads. God I love guns!
