Need Advice quickly please.. Moss 500..

Found a Mossberg 500a Mariner 18.5"bbl, NIB for $299 down from $499only 1 left closeout special. I had the guy put a 24hr hold on it. I looked at a few sites i.e. buds and impactguns and they sell it for about $450.

My main purpose is Home Defense.

Would I be out of my mind to pass this deal up? Or should I keep looking for a used one at pawn shops. I went to a few today and the lowest priced used mossberg or rem 870 was $225 and they had 26" Bbl, not ideal for HD close quarters.

Any thoughts or comments PLZ and Thanks

You need a gun. This is a new one with a new gun warranty. You have it on hold, and it sounds like a fair price. If it meets your requirement, why not?

This is a small purchase and should not require much deliberation.

Are the Moss 500's less reliable than an 870?

Would I be better off waiting till next weekend when a gun show is schuduled and find a used 870 for a bit less?

Then I understand I go into the new 500 mariner with factory warranty vs used gun show piece.

My main question now is why do people here and alot of places dislike mossberg? Reliability issues, asthetics, quality of worksmanship?

probably cant go wrong with getting the mossberg, the 500 and the 870 are very popular and I dont think you will find to many dislikes about either one other than brand loyalty they are both usually very reliable guns.

If the on-sale Mariner is cheaper than a comparable blue steel M500, definitely go for it. Otherwise, if you don't live on a boat or close to a body of salt water, and if you take reasonable care of your firearms, I see no need to spend extra to get a marine finish - unless you just like 'white' guns.

There's no viable argument that either the 870 or the M500 is 'better' or 'more reliable.' I like 870s because I grew up with them, and have used them for 40 years. But I have a couple or three Mossberg pumps as well. For down and dirty drag it through the mud use I'd prefer a 590 to a 500, simply because the 590 has a pull-through magazine tube, but for a 'house gun' that's hardly a consideration. And at my age, my days of crawling through the ditches are pretty well over anyway

. And the only Marine finish shotgun I have is a Mossberg 590, bought used and cheap because the previous owner had slathered paint all over it.

Fair price. Go for it. As far as 870 vs 500, IMO, I like the 870 better for hunting and the 500 better for tactical. The are both good at both tasks though. I'm a mossberg guy.

Forgot to mention, the main reason I like the 500 over the 870 is the location of the action release and safety.

That's nice. You did the right thing.

My brother and I are both proud owners of 500s. I was wrapped up in the great debate b/w that and the Remy, but decided that the action release and tang safety suited me better with the 500. I have a 24" slugster bbl (smoothbore, no choke) with rifle sights that I plan on taking a deer with sometime in the future. My brother owns the tactical variant in 20" I believe, fixed full choke. He ripped the bead sight and heat shield off, replaced it with a green fat bead.

I went to walmart last night for 100 round target shells and saw a slip-on limbsaver recoil pad made by Winchester, for 20 bucks. Anyone have experience with the slip on limbsaver? Does it slip on over my current stock pad or do I un screw the stock one? Noob question I know but like I said before this is my first shotgun.

I can adequetly handle the recoil my main reason for this is if my wife has to use it in HD scenario and shes fairly small.

Congrats on the new gun it looks sweet.

I have the slip on limbsaver on my Mossberg 500 20ga. I just slipped it right on. I can handle the recoil just fine but after 50 or so rounds I like having the limbsaver.
