Favorite non .22 plinking rifle?

My favorite plinker is my single shot H&R .45 Colt classic carbine.
From quiet round ball gallery loads to 200 grain LSWC target loads to 300 grain WFP bunker busters, the little carbine handles it all.

I bought it about the same time a neighbor was having armadillo problems,,,
With her holding the spotlight we managed to thin out those garden raiders very Handily.

Please pardon the pun.

But seriously it's a blast to shoot this rifle,,,
The single-shot platform promotes slow leisurely shooting.

I scored a used Leupold scope at The Evil Pawn Shop,,,
It's probably worth more than the rifle but it really shoots nice now.

A friend who had all of his guns stolen,,,
Gave me about 600 rounds of lightly loaded .38 Special ammo,,,
Out of the longer barrel of the rifle they have plenty of range and are very quiet.

That may be the reason I "plink" with this rifle so much,,,
But there's no doubt that it is accurate and fun,,,
I love to launch brass over my shoulder,,,
Deters the lookie-loo's at my range.

I have a couple that are fun and cheap to shoot. I can load .38 or .30-30 with a cast bullet for less than a 22 RF round costs.

One is a Handi Rifle that is now a .357 MAXIMUM. I can load it to be a 22 RF or a .35 Remington.

Others are Marlin, Winchester 94 or Topper 158 30-30s. With a cast 113 bullet and 7 grs of Green Dot, I have a good small game load or plinker. With 3 grs. of Clays, I have a garden pest gun that I can shoot while neighbors are on their decks. It sounds about like a car door being closed. At 30 yards it will anchor a tree rat, possum or coon raiding my garden. I am told that it will solve a feral cat problem.

The RWS34 .177 is always fun and say what you will about the HiPoint carbines in 9mm & 40 but they are fun too

I thoroughly enjoy my CZ carbine. I can use full on 155 grainers or scale it down to 9mm velocities. Czech goodness.

I can't wait to get a CX4 carbine though.

I agree completely with this,,,
I can decimate major appliances in my buddy's field,,,
Every bit as well as they can using their high-dollar 9mm carbines.

My only problem (and the reason it's not my favorite non-rimfire plinker),,,
Is that I can go through several hundred rounds very quickly,,,
I have 5 mags so that's a box of 9mm in 2 minutes,,,
My Handi-Rifle in 38/357 remains my favorite.

The funny thing about the Hi-Points, everyone that knocks them, has never owned or fired one. I had 2 until recently. Had to let a 9mm carbine go for a trade a 1895 Nagant to complete my Russian collection lol. But I will have another.

Yep, like I said earlier, better than .22! Or you can get HW95 Luxus in 0.20, better rifle but not as cost effective. Stay away from Gamo though (unless your only going to use it once )

If your are just talking about blasting the hell out of stuff then my short barrel AR or any of my milsurp rifles.
But of course the ol 44mag is a lot of fun too.

Mine would be my older Marlin 1894 in 25-20. It's so much fun to shoot that I bought a progressive press just to feed it.

Plinking (in my not-so-humble opinion) should be slow and leisurely,,,
It should be a relaxing endeavor that calms the soul.

Single-shot rifles are the absolute perfect medium for that criteria.

I even bought a single-shot adaptor for my CZ-452 military Trainer,,,
And it has the added advantage of helping me conserve ammo.

I have a good friend with an 11 year old son,,,
I take the young boy out to the range quite often.

When I first took him to the range with me,,,
He was disappointed that I didn't bring a semi-auto,,,
I brought a Crickett and a Henry Accu-Bolt for him to use.

It took a while but he finally warmed up to shooting slowly,,,
And now that he can actually hit where he aims,,,
He's seen the wisdom of sniper mentality,,,
One shot - One hit.

Especially now that his dad makes him buy,,,
His own ammo with his own money.

Yeah my semi's are lotsa fun,,,
But I always hit better with my single-shots.

I prefer the AK over the AR, ( I have both). I like having a little recoil associated with the firing of the round.

I probably use my wife's ASR in 9mm the most for plinking, but my favorite gun of all time for plinking is my FN49. Surplus 8mm Mauser can be had for around the same price as 223/556 still, and it is crazy fun to shoot.

My brother once had a new G.I. 30 Carbine that had been stolen from an armory in WWII, probably in pieces, then he died. His mother, years later, gave it to my aunt who gave it to my brother, along with about 3,000 rounds of GI ammo, cleaning supplies, and several magazines. We shot that rifle for several years and it was absolutely the best plinking rifle I've ever fired...accurate, low recoil, and just a blast!!! He had a car accident when in college and had to sell it to pay the damages.

I'd thought of getting another one, but don't think I could go back again. In the past week, I shot a commercial one and it just wasn't the same.

Anyway, the two non .22LR that I plink with are a .22WMR, CZ 455 and a .223 Rem Tikka 595. The Tikka is as accurate a rifle as I've ever shot and it has a great trigger. Viva le .223!

Oh, actually, my favorite plinker just may be this Savage Cub .22lr (single shot bolt action), which I shoot around the house with Aguila Super Colibri rounds (20 gr @ 500 fps). This rifle is "dedicated" to this round / purpose. Forward-mounted Hawke MAP 3x32mm (crossbow) scope. Grackle-smiting mo-sheen.

Amen to that. When I gave a CZ 452 Scout in .22lr to my nephew, I kept the 5 round mag and put in a single-shot adapter. That will do til he's 15 or so; then I'll give him the 5-rounder.
